That makes zero sense. A politician would say things like that to gain something in return (votes/money). What does Paul have to gain by gushing over New Orleans? Nothing. He has shown no reason to doubt him when he speaks positively about the city.

Competitive advantage.
If you believe that a Paul has nothing to gain over a divided fanbase in a playoff matchup, or that his image takes a boost, days after another nut kicking incident, moments after elbowing a guy in the mouth.

The difference between Paul and Toni is Paul is an expert manipulator and Toni is an introvert.

Exactly this.
What he has to gain is goodwill. If everyone generally likes you, you’ll always get the benefit of the doubt. Just look at this thread, people are rationalizing him kicking guys in the nuts as just him being ultra competitive. Lol nah baby, that’s scumbag behavior.

For all his “love” of the city, I’d genuinely like to know what ties he has to New Orleans. Any property? Businesses? Charities? And not just NBA Cares stuff when the All-Star Game comes to town.

https://www.outkick.com/chris-paul-answers-f-you-chants-with-postcard-of-love-for-his-new-orleans-home/

quote:

Late in the game when Phoenix was in control and Paul was still popping, the chants of “F-You, Chris Paul” came from a few angry fans of a capacity crowd of 17,791.

When asked about the “reception,” Paul said, “Which chants?” And it is believable that he did not hear them.

“Oh, no, these are my people, man you’re talking about,” he said when told what the chant was. “Like I said, I grew up here. Six of the best years of my life I played for New Orleans.”

“That’s a select number of people in an entire group,” Paul said of the chants. “I know how I am with this city. That will never change. I had my parents here, my family here. There will always be so much love between me and the city here. I never pay that any mind.”

Paul exited the press conference room and immediately hugged and greeted some of the Smoothie King Center staff crew who were working back when he was a Hornet.

“Love it here,” he said.

For someone to respond that way to chants like that, I'm gonna take them at their word.

The correlation y'all are making between the way a guy plays basketball and his feelings toward a city are hilarious and totally void of logic.

Yes, how they answer the press, is a politicians word. The most trite and easily digestible responses Paul has as some people boo his dirty play he tells the audience how much he loves New Orleans.

I boo Chris Paul because of his actions on the court, in the locker room(like when he tried to sneak into another teams locker room to settle beef) , and in CBA negotiations(where he used his power to enrich the older wealthier players that were his peer group, taking money away from fringe and younger players) . not his “undying love” for a place he won’t even be closely associated with.

All that is fine. Boo him if you want to for those things. I was never here arguing he is the perfect human being.

My point remains that none of those things have ANYTHING to do with his feelings towards New Orleans.

If CP took a dump on your head it would be because he loves NOLA!

Why would feelings toward New Orleans change how you view a dirty cheating flopping player?

As a known politician why do you believe anything he says is authentic?

You people, I swear.

I don't like a dirty player. I don't see how that changes once the game is over.

Jesus...you don't have to like him. Boo him if you want to. All I'm saying is a player's style of play has nothing to do with his feelings on a city. I honestly can't believe people are arguing otherwise.

Jesus Christ, you people. What makes you think anything he says is authentic? Sports don’t build character they reveal it. He’s a dirty flopping whiny politicking bitch and his “love for the city”-which is fricking irrelevant given his actions to our players like Jose who loves this franchise far more, should have any sane fan with any conviction to be done with that bitch.

It's funny how Willie Green is 1 million times more invested in the Pels than any of us but he didn't magically start hating Chris Paul during this series.

Some dudes are wayyyyyy too emotional.

If Willy still loves him, that’s good enough for me to at the very least be neutral about him.

Phoenix fans probably think Herb/Jose/Hayes are dirty players too and hate them for it, but it’s just fierce competition.

Name a single Hornet/Pelicans player from the past that has ever spoken as highly about the city as Chris Paul does…a decade later. He even said he pulls for the Pels when he isn’t playing us which I 100% believe due to his relationship with Willie.

2x time NBA Teammate of the Year Jrue Holiday for starters.

Jrue speaks well of nola but no where near the way CP does.

And his words don’t really mean much to me. I wasn’t even gonna comment about it on this board until I saw people correlating style of play to how one feels toward the city. It’s so dumb and illogical I couldn’t resist.

His "wedding toast" where he stated he wanted to start a big 3 with the Knicks (while he was still a Hornet) is unforgivable imo. Even if it was directed at Shinn, it was still very disrespectful to the NOLA fans. And anyone who has hit multiple different opponents in the groin over the years will never get any respect from me.

Uhhhhh, they were teammates and he's close friends with him. We tend to try look past bad traits of our close friends. He has more invested in Chris Paul with his past and close friendship than we do. As fans, we don't have those current strong ties to Chris Paul, so in one way, you are somewhat correct. Paul is who he is. Great player, but he plays dirty.
