This is what Monty said about Rivers a few weeks before the draft:
quote:

“A lot of guys can handle the ball, but they don’t have command,” Williams said. “I think he has command of the ball. He can dribble and see what’s going on.

smh.

And yea I would rather have taken Lamb. Especially considering we already had a 2 guard in Gordon. I would have rather taken Lamb, Harkless, Henson and Terrence Jones over Rivers.

Damn! If only we could of got a guy who averages 7.7 points, 1.2 assists, and 2.2 rebounds!!!!!!

Rivers and Monty are good friends. I wonder...You probably argue that it isn't sean payton, but loomis that makes the picks too right?

Maybe he put in a good word for Rivers. I'm sure he was even consulted by Demps, but a GM is not going to just pick a player in the top 10 because the coach is an old friend. I'm sorry if that doesn't fit with your narrative.

You got a steal "once in a lifetime" player in AD. the 10th pick in a "deep draft" should produce you a good bench player that is...Jeremy lamb. Oh damn, for some reason he's playing well. At least better than rivers is. Monty wanted to convert Rivers (a SG) into a PG. that's the dumbest thing ever. If a player doesn't have the vision, never showed the vision, they won't just develop it overnight.

i don't think anyone wanted rivers. If anything it was Kendall Marshall who people wanted to take the point > rivers

Chicago's roster isn't good either.

...isn't that the point of all of this?...to get a better coach?

I think we all wanted Drummond to fall one more pick because he had so much more upside and fit so much better than anyone left at that point.

why does Chicago's roster = 34-27, but Pelicans roster = 10 game losing streak?

Monty also talked up Rivers by saying he wanted someone who wasn't afraid to shoot in the closing minutes. He wanted a closer. Rivers gets benched for Roberts when it counts. How's that working out?

Back before the draft I said I wanted Lamb, Harkless and T.Jones at the 10th pick.

I thought Lamb was the 2nd best shooter in the draft behind Beal. And thought Harkless had a lot of talent and potential, more so than Rivers. And T. Jones was a combo 3/4 that has ability and athleticism to play the 3, but also the physicality and build to play the 4. I thought all 3 of those guys had more potential and would be better than Rivers before the draft.

I didnt want Henson due to the similarities between he and AD. And before the draft everyone thought AD would be a PF and couldnt play C because of his weight. But it turns out he can play both PF and C.

I would always rather have a good 3 guard than a good 2 guard. Especially in recent years where the best players in the league are typically 3 guards.

And I didnt see the need for us to take a 2 guard back then. We didnt have a SF or a PG. Thought those were bigger position of need.

Balance and depth.

ETA - Also, we haven't had a 10 game losing streak.

9.5 PPG in 22 MPG on 44% shooting this season...14.2 PER

...WAY better than Rivers.

I meant given the options at the 10th pick after drummond was taken. I think we all knew it was going to be rivers unfortunately.

pretty much...

rivers' average is 6.3ppg, 1.6rpg, 1.9apg shooting 37.9/32.7/59.4

while lamb averages 42.6/34.4/87.1, less turnovers 0.6 vs. river's 1.1. More steals and blocks and less minutes.

if I wanted a 2 guard who couldn't shoot a free throw, I'd want rivers. But the game is to make free throws.

This is revisionist history at it's finest. A ton of people wanted to draft AR at 10, especially with Lillard/Drummond/Ross gone.

People forget that Lamb didn't look that great in his 2nd season at UConn and was pencil thin at the time.

I'll agree that Thibs is a better coach than Monty, but I also think he is one of the best in the game. There isn't a Thibs available. There is First Round George and Avery Johnson.

rivers got drafted off one big time shot.

we just got EG on a fresh contract, why get a similar skill set player? Oh wait, we were 'converting him to a PG'. He never had that vision, even in college. I watched enough duke games to know he needed at least 1 more year. I also had enough duke friends that said he was going to be a colossal bust if he went into the NBA. Looks like they were right.

Rivers is 6.5 points in 19 minutes on 39% shooting 10.56 per. I fail to see the huge gap in which you are talking about.
