a level Gentry never got to either in 10+ years of head coaching.

He took the Suns to the WCF, so his resume was a little bit better than the 2-8 in the playoffs from Monty.

I wanted Hoiberg. Gentry sounded appealing b/c of his success with GSW, but even without him they look like a championship team again.

Hoiberg was never a real option. If he was leaving Iowa, it was for the Bulls.

I wanted Van Gundy, but I'm thinking Dell was intimidated by him.

That team was far more talented and made far more sense than any roster Dell has ever assembled.

Mike Brown made it to the Finals.
Jim Caldwell made it to a Super Bowl.

They made it to WCF, lost Amare the next year and didn't make the playoffs (40-42) with a team of Nash (only missed 7 games), Gortat/RLopez, Frye/Vince/Grant Hill/Dudley all shooting over 37% from 3, and very little injury issues. They did give up the most points per game in teh league that year, and were 3rd to last the year they made the WCF.

I didn't say he was a world beater, but he got to the WCF where Monty never made it past the first round, so if one of the qualities you're looking for is taking a team past the first round, Gentry has done it. I didn't really like the hire but I can see why they made it.

the goal isnt' to make it past the first round. it's to win a championship.
I don't know when the last NBA champion gave up 100+ppg, like all of Gentry's teams have, but i do know that no champion in the last 16 years has given up over 100ppg to their opponents. His system doesn't yield championship success, and i'm not interested in watching a fun team not win anything significant, and by significant, i mean a championship.
We had a better chance at a championship with Monty than Gentry, and I don't like either of those chances.

I'm not really arguing with you, I just tried to clarify a statement I felt was factually ambiguous, I wasn't trying to make you dwell on how much you don't like Gentry

Haha, those two are complete polar opposites. Would be a funny mix.

Alvin Gentry said learning his system is “a two-way street.” Players have to adjust, but he has to adapt to his personnel. Ongoing process.

corndeaux has made some good points about how it wouldn't take much more from the players to execute Gentry's system properly, and an article from TBW today talks about all the good, open shots the team is getting (and missing), yet the point made over the last few days that stood out the most to me is Jester's about why setting the P&R up so high just doesn't play to AD's strength and one dribble ability. Alvin needs to adjust to that. Hopefully one of Gentry's interns read the file on AD and figures it out.

There are many things that I like about Gentry...but at the top of this list is how he communicates...He sees that there are problems, is frank about them, and discusses changes that need to be made as a result.

HUGE change from Monty.

ETA: 5000th post had the dreaded "Monty" word in it. Disappointing.

If only I could figure out where to submit my scouting report...
