So if you are going to trade Zion you want to add multiple years and more average annual salary of the “needle moving” Sabonis to come be your best player? Derik Queen and Domas with the sharpshooting Jeremiah Fears and 30 year old post Achilles Dejounte. Trey and Herb aren’t bringing that group anywhere. Why would I trade Zion to be a lower ceiling, more expensive team?
Also, great post bringing up career highs as impact stats. You really convinced me. Saadiq Bey and Dejounte Murray are similar impact players to Zion. Thanks for the education!

I'm not a big Sabonis guy, but after 6 years of Zion
What kind of ceiling do you think that a team led by him actually has?
Personally I think his ceiling as a number 1 in this league is incredibly low, especially as he ages out of his prime (more rapidly than skill based players).

I’m not saying I would keep Zion at all costs, I’m saying if I am going to go after a player at Sabonis’ level I don’t want him to be the top player on the team. Trading Zion for a guy at a similar salary but can’t be a number one option doesn’t make sense to me. After the Queen trade, if they decide to trade Zion, I think they have to try to recoup some kind of draft capital because they are going to be bad. Being bad. With high salaries, with a year with no pick is a tough place to be.
The only way I would trade for a guy like Sabonis is if Zion proves he can be the guy and I feel Sabonis/ Murphy can be a good second and third option. Trading Murray in that scenario still leaves Herb as your #4 and the rookies/Bey as the leaders of the bench.

I did not bring them up as impact stats. The point was that Zion's "best" so far is no better than anyone else's best on our team. Do you want to pay Zion 60+mil when he indeed does not have the impact of Jokic/ Booker type players? Its not about similar impact its about cost vs value.
If a healthy Zion is worth (5) 1st and DOESN'T MOVE THE NEEDLE while an unhealthy Murray is worth (0) 1sts then I'd rather get the value of 5 1st and keep Murray as his value is better on the team and being rehabbed. If we trade Z for someone who can replace his production and add additional value to the team then that is a good move. That comment wasn't specifically meant for a Sabonis trade but as a whole.
I am not surprised that you aren't capable of thinking past "Zion is better than Saddiq Bey so that's a stupid point derrr" and then make it your whole argument based on that.

Sabonis is better than Zion. So by default you are saying that Zion isn't a #1. But are also saying that if we trade Zion then you want a true #1. So you want to attach assets with Zion?
The last 3 years Zion has played 129 games averaging 24.5pts/ 6.5reb/ 5ast
Meanwhile Sabonis has played 231 games averaging 19pts/ 13.5reb/ 7ast
Just having one guy on the court for an extra 34+ games per season is a massive impact not including that he actually does more.
"I don't want to trade Zion because he's a #1 but I don't want to trade Zion for someone better than him because they aren't a #1"
I love this board.
