They produced nothing of substance. They are only revered by those who want to seem edgy, cool and "in the know". They sucked.

Ace of Spades

Forgot about that thing.

Link Wray immediately came to mind (the original song of said title, which he also redid in a different vein, and was named Fatback).

They aired it live on JamOn and I hoped in my truck with my dad and headed home from the camp right when they started playing Jessica, my dad wasn't a widespread fan till that very moment last night.

The whole show was killer when I was listening to it.

hey are very respectful of other musicians from a broad swath of genres, and often pay tribute to their influences by busting out an "interpretation" of their tunes.

They are boring and their concerts last too g'damn long. I have never for the life of me figured out how frat guys (who still think they're in a frat) and acid freaks can enjoy the same music. That's just my opinion. To each his own. Yes, that's a stereotype as there are fans who aren't either, but show me a band that plays in the south that can bag up more of those two personalities and put them into one place than another. I always found it odd that my friends who knew dick about music always followed this band for 2 weeks to hear 3 hour concerts every night -- these were also my frat friends. They did not do drugs...maybe smoke a joint with their Old Charter. I'm just saying...I always found that peculiar...not knowing who the Allman Brother were or thinking Lynard Skynard was the lead singer's name; wearing Grateful Dead t-shirts but unable to name Jerry Garcia...there were my WSP friends and acquaintances.

*I finally watched the performance. Obviously, WSP fans had no CLUE who Lemmy was judging by the reactions in the front rows. Why don't these people find a more traditional band to like before they follow a largely cover band around the south?

I'm neither a frat guy (formerly or currently) and am not an acid freak--although I have visited the spirit world a few times. As for me, I like lingering leads; songs about ribs, whiskey and your sister getting naked poolside; songs about chicken and how much I love it; and I also like songs about kissing mountain air.... i really love kissing mountain air.

Luckily for me, Widespread Panic writes, records, and plays at their shows songs that directly deal with all that shite. Hoofrickingray!

What kind of songs do you like?

Also, with the rising costs of going to a concert these days, you'll never hear me bitchin' about a show being too long...that's like complaining about a pussy being too wet... i.e., kinda fricking gaaaay.

Also.....

that's not touching on the multitude of charities Panic supports at their shows, the homes they built for poor in the post - Katrina rebuild, the spontaneous street party concerts they'll do in downtrodden sections of Nola to help out old bar owners who've fallen on hard times and are in danger of losing their livelihood (08 after Jazz Fest as an example)... or the fact that in today's self-indulgent, me - first attitude, douche bag laden entertainment industry cess pool, the guys in Widespread Panic remain humble, approachable, down to Earth, and very connected to their fan base. They deserve a fricking medal as far as I'm concerned. Maybe that's why the mayor of Denver gave them a key to the city.

Dig deeper friend, there's more to them than frat row.

I GUARANTEE you watch a show with me and my flow.... you're leaving that show a fan of WSP. Happy New Year, brooooo.

Well, you convinced me. I am holding a gun to my wife's head and we are listening to a WSP cover of another cover by some hillbilly band. I now LOVE WSP.

In all seriousness, I appreciate your response. At least you are likely a cool dude...just too much into WSP.

My bad experience comes from a Mule concert at JazzFest 2004 (Orpheus Theatre) where a junkie about like you talked me into it and guest apperanance after guest apperance, I was fricking ready to go. 3 hours and 15 minutes...the reason I also don't watch Ben Hur when it comes on AMC. Then, two years later, I accidentally fan into a WSP show (long story) and this time it was 4 hours with like 12 encores. I got to see Les Claypool out of the whole deal, so not too bad. VERY drunk that night in Georgia.

My tastes? I listen to just about everything from Primus to Echo and the Bunnymen to GNR to Joy Divison and New Order to Public Enemy to Pantera and Down. And yes, I too have jumped off the hallucinogens bridge a time or 40...been about 10 years, but I once enjoyed that side of the life. No longer.

I'm gonna assume you meant "junky" in the sense that I like Panic a lot, and not in a negative, loser kinda way. Otherwise I'd be tempted to list all the day-to-day, responsible adult shite I do to keep the kid fed and the wheels on the wagon greased...but, I digress...

I was 18 when i started listening to them in 2000. A friend burned me a cd of a Nola show a few years before. I listened to it quite a bit because their style was new to me. I was used to more "structured" songs from the bands i liked (Waylon and Willie and the like, Zeppelin, Alice in Chains, all sorts of shite). I wasn't sure why they went on long jams without much singing, but that grew on me pretty quickly because i thought their guitarist was SICK and it seemed like they were always on the same page with their jams.... unfortunately he died in 02, but they have pressed on and are still my favorite band. For having liked Panic and digging deeper into their music, I was lead towards these peeps as well when I was young and looking for better music than I was hearing on the radio:

JJ Cale
Traffic
New Riders of the Purple Sage
War
Wet Willy
The Grateful Dead
Robert Johnson
Blood kin
Mule
Vic Chesnut
Phish
NMAS
Galactic
Particle
Electric Mudd
Drive by Truckers

..list goes on and on.

I've written articles for a local magazine and have actually gotten paid to go see some of these bands and write about them.

So I guess I'm just thankful my friend gave me that Panic cd, because it expanded my musical horizons and showed me that it was alright to get out of my comfort zone because there is A LOT of good shite out there if you go looking for it...

Cheers, Happy New Year.
