Anticipation phase is incredible. Lends a lot of information on the human mind, IMO.

Our brains, in certain networks, are involved in making predictions based on stored knowledge of a certain system. Music, in this case. Songs and sounds you've heard before are encoded into your brain so when you hear a new song, your brain makes certain predictions of the next note in the song, for example. What's also interesting is that the same anticipation has been shown to be very accurate in predicting a range of stimuli in psychology studies.

I guess this explains, on a neurophysiological level, why so much popular music is formulaic.
