I remember really enjoying the Superbowl where Aerosmith mixed a lot of their songs with Nelly and Britney Spears. The Aerosmith Walk This Way Remix with DMC and the Linkin Park/Jay-Z album where they combined the songs into one really stood out.

The Dan Lebatard Show always mashes songs together in the radio station bumpers. Some of them are pretty good.

I feel like side projects are a lot more common today because of access to recording equipment and that pretty much serves the same function without the clear "sell out" intentions.
