A lot of alternative rock music derived from punk rock.

i.e. Nirvana, The Replacements, Pixies, etc.

Of course, this all depends on what you mean by Punk and Alternative.

Why wouldn't they? Alt rock was born out of punk. The rough development was punk to college rock to alternative. Hell, even a lot of that twee stuff is born out of punk.

It's like classic rock but totally different.

Can alternative be alternative without being indie?

Can indie be indie without being alternative?

When you're both are you indieternative?

Or is that indeterminate?

I can't stand alt stations.
They will play pearl jam and follow with AFI. Really high bad song to good song ratio

Because what you call punk is actually just alternative music. "Punk" hasn't been popular since the 1970's, and punk today is extremely underground/shitty.

Nirvana was a pretty popular punk band. The 90s had a huge popularity boom for punk bands. Even older acts like Social Distortion got radio play.

I can thank alternative radio for introducing me to:

Bad Religion - Stranger than Fiction
Offspring - Smash
Rancid - And Out Come The Wolves
Green Day - Dookie

I'm not a huge punk fan, but nearly 20 years later these are all still great albums.
