By the '50s Elvis & Buddy Holly were the focus not their bands, even if BH had to release records as The Crickets for convoluted contractual reasons.

The Beatles were a curious return to the band era. Perhaps it was an offshoot of the idealist/collectivist outlook of the time.

I saw a doc (90s?) which said how Alabama "brought the band concept to country music".

All that was killed by rap.

Why be part of a group, at the mercy of group decisions (& splitting the money), when you can work by yourself?

or do like santana and just bring in singers and contract the band and own everything?

Because I needed a drummer for live shows. Fake drums live is peak cringe.
