I gotta go with Television. Marquee Moon is the album that spawned the others.

Velvet Underground no doubt.

If alternative carries a sound that is associated with college rock and backlash, then it was R.E.M or the Replacements.
If it carries the connotation of something never ever heard nor close to conceived, then it was Throbbing Gristle, Suicide, or Tangerine Dream of course, Industrial would become branded to most of this, instead).
If it carries ROCK only, then it was no question The Velvet Underground.
The Stooges...I just do not see it, nor do I see it being Television.
If Alternative simply means "game changer" or "when the world changed with music", then it is undisputed that the Sex Pistols -- a band who would NEVER allow themselves to be painted with any alternative brush -- are the quintessential alternative to the mainstream.

Meh...they were not doing anything special. It was simply their look that set them apart. They were one of MTV's first hits. They are a mix of Silver Apples, The Stones, Throbbing Gristle, Brian Eno, the Sex Pistols, and Human League and for that, they should never be called original anything other than visualizing knights.

IMO The Cars what makes them "alternative" is they took classic guitar riffs and formatted the delivery in a new age way.
Best examples that come to mind
Just what I needed I swear I can hear Cobain doing a cover of this song in my head.
You're all that I've got tonight Smashing Pumpkins covered this one

hardly anyone outside of Athens had heard the chronic town EP
We also played the hell out of the original Hib-Tone single of "Radio Free Europe" that one of the DJs had picked up in Athens in late Summer of '81.
