I’ve been big into thrash metal lately and working my way up from the early 80s into 90s and current day
I noticed that some of the bands I try have this deep Cookie Monster type voice. Wtf is that and where did it come from? Did one particular band start it?

Cookie monster vocals is a death metal thing, not thrash.

Sepultura is the first one that comes to my mind.

Possessed and Tom G. Warrior with Hellhammer were the first I remember hearing. Death's first album had great distorted vocals. Cannibal Corpse was always the best cookie monster vocal.

Gene Simmons was growling in the 70's

The band Death is widely regarded as one of the first to do it in death metal. The actual first use of low vocals goes back further than that though.

Ha I knew you guys living in your parents basements wouldn't like that Simmons comment but he didn't sing in his true voice until his solo album in 78. Most things before that were a growl, some more pronounced than others.

No matter who did it first, Phil Anselmo is the one that made it relevant,

A lot of singers may have heard it with Lemmy & Motorhead and then took it to another level.
