And what's your story? I play for children at Martin Home Museum in Columbia La. Its great fun and even the teachers(3rd grade) have never seen one. My stress reliever at 71 years old.

I played one on my last cd. There was one in the studio, I picked it up, figured out a couple things real quick and we added it to the song we were recording at the time.

Took me 10 years to get where I am now. Old man, stiff fingers. If you are in a band, check out what (Bucko Futreal dulcimer) can do with his dulcimers.

I don't play one proficiently but I've worked on several. Here's a cool gallery showing a cool modification to mountain dulcimers.
While guitars and most other fretted instruments are fretted chromatically, dulcimers are typically arranged in a diatonic scale. A popular dulcimer modification in recent times is adding a "six and a half" fret. It opens a player's possibilities to include the Ionian mode (think major scale, do-re-mi-fa) along with the dulcimer's traditional Mixolydian mode (folk and medieval church music) when played in the open string key and tuned to traditional D-A-D tuning. This arrangement is often found to be more conducive to chord-melody play.
Be sure to read each photo's description for what you're seeing to make more sense.

That's a Hammered ducimer. I've got one but too old to start learning to play it. Hoping a grandchild will get the urge.

Joni Mitchell plays the dulcimer... and she's introduced by Johnny Cash.
