I am friends with Dax.

But not to be biased, go listen to When the Kite String Pops, and Paegan Terrosim Tactics all the way through and come back and tell me that it isnt timeless metal.

If Mötley Crüe would have done more stuff like Shout At The Devil, they'd receive my vote.

I listened to a a couple of songs but not them. They kind of remind me of a few college bands from Ky when I was in school.

eta: I'll have to give them some more attention later on in the week. Thanks for the heads up.

Sabbath is great but I don't consider them metal.

But if they, and other early bands didn't exist, would there be metal today??? Ask the bands themselves who they feel is #1, I bet they say Black Sabbath.

Saying the greatest of all time with metal is so subjective nowadays because the genre has changed so much. Maiden and Megadeth hell yeah, Metallica can get the hell out of here with their pop-metal BS.

I don't know how to compare the newer stuff I love (Tool, Meshuggah, etc.) to the old stuff. It's almost a different genre.

I vote Metallica.

Maiden is a close second for me, if only for their lack of consistency on individual albums. Many of their albums in the 80's (they released one per year) seemed more focused on quantity over quality of songs with the exceptions of Killers, Number and Seventh Son. Lots of dud songs there. Judas Priest was similar.

Godfathers of metal: Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Blue Cheer (IE technically not metal but influenced many metal bands)

The one time I saw Deadboy, it was downright horrible. Left halfway through. Thankfully, the random blues band that opened was solid, so it wasn't a total loss.

My favorites:

Opeth
Strapping Young Lad
Sepultura
Meshuggah

Meshuggah was the only one I saw mentioned already. Like others have said, it's very subjective.

I don't count anything they made after And Justice For All.

Greatest /=/ your favorite band

I think Isis, Mastodon, Gojira are great but they're not among the elite

I'd have to say Black Sabbath is the greatest of all time, although I could see an argument being made for Iron Maiden or maybe Metallica.
