Underrated, particularly as he is self-taught and has, more or less, a completely unique and difficult to copy style.

Fleetwood Mac is definitely on the lighter side of rock, which hurts his reputation among the pantheon of guitar heroes. The same is true for contemporaries Waddy Wachtel, Don Felder and Todd Rundgren - three fantastic guitar players.

Eh, musicians, like actors, are always saying things like this about one other. Lot of mutual arse kissing goes on, especially among top tier performers. Prince was supremely talented, but "the greatest living guitarist?" I'd take that with a grain of salt.

First of all - Clapton is a better blues guitarist than he ever was a rock guitarist. I believe it is possible to say that Clapton was both great and overrated as a rock guitarist. I think that's also true of his contemporary Pete Townshend. Hell, it might be true of Page.

Prince was probably underrated as a guitarist until the last 10 to 12 years of his life, when folks began to actually notice his virtuosity. Not that he didn't get a lot of attention from about 1983 onward, but his songwriting, showmanship, "persona" and just the whole "Minneapolis Sound" overshadowed his playing. And, it probably hurts most multi-instrumentalists if they do a lot of different things. McCartney was a great guitarist, but most folks remember his singing, songwriting - and maybe piano work more, or worse, think of him as primarily a bass player. I think Prince could play almost any musical instrument that might be used by a rock, funk or jazz outfit well.

Ann got big fairly quickly. But she was never a 9/10 to begin with - a solid 7.5 (8?) if you liked brunettes (and I do), but never a straight up stunner like Stevie was in the 1970s.

Stevie had weight problems too, but not as dramatic as Ann Wilson or Ronstadt. Now, in Ronstadt's case it is medication and side effects from medical issues, so I'm giving her a pass on the decline. She was more "cute" than beautiful - whereas Stevie captured both in a singular, definitive way.

Solos don't do it for me, and I don't give two shits about technical mastery. That's fodder for music snobs

You should be able to appreciate both.....the musician who has dedicated his life to his instrument and the less skilled yet soulful player.
