I've been listening to a lot of DP lately and have really enjoyed it. Love the Hammond work, but where do they stack up against other rock acts of that era?

Behind Sabbath, Maiden, and Zeppelin, and in the second tier grouping of Priest, Motorhead, Scorpions, etc.

I'm a huge fan of Deep Purple, and rank their Made in Japan live album as one of the best live albums ever. Child in Time, Highway Star, Strange Kind of Woman, Lazy and of course Smoke on the Water are iconic and damn near perfect! As a classic rock guy I place them right there with Zep, Sabbath, Grand Funk and Alice Cooper as my best of the best.

They aren't heavy metal -- and since I hate heavy metal, I rank them ahead of heavy metal.

Yea, I agree. Some of that hammond stuff is pretty technical sounding. Plus "Hush" has a pretty deep groove.

I had a bad case of deep purple rank last week. Gas-X cleared it up.

One of my top ten rock bands all all time. Ian Gillan had an amazing voice.

Right up there with Sabbath and Zeppelin. I hear that Ian Gillan is quite the cunning linguist.

Solid band, solid songs, great live act - was able to replace one legendary singer after another - and built around the best minor key 6-string player - probably ever.

But, at a certain point the whole idea of Deep Purple is really diffuse - like 100 guys have been through that band - so is it more of an abstract musical concept that morphed over time, or do we want to pin it down to definable periods (sort of like we have to do with Sabbath, only much more would have to go into it for Deep Purple to really capture the change in sound)?

What a fantastic song! Perfect Strangers is a great, overlooked album.

Killer group!! Ranked with the best in the early 70's.
Smoke on the Water is easily a top 10 all time Classic Rock song.
