I’ve read through the comments and have to say I’m stunned. Jack White is an awful guitar player and can’t sing. The documentary was great, but he was laughable. I think it was The Weight that he attempted to play and sing... he was pounding the shite out of the guitar with ZERO touch and his vocals were complete shite. Jimmy Page schooled his arse and the Edge was looking around thinking “Is this some kind of joke?” I’m not sure how he was ever elevated to anything other than street musician, but he got lucky with the right A&R rep who turned him into something he’s not... a quality musician.

The Edge is a shitty horrible guitarist from one of the worst bands of all time.

That documentary was watching two guys who wish they were masters experience true perfection in art.

Umm. Uhh. Ok? Clearly you’re a millennial and not a musician. Jack White is shite with good A&R marketing. Period.

Are you a big U2 fan or something?

I'm not a rock God or anything, but I have been singing, playing guitar, and piano for over 20 years.

What part of my comment did you disagree with?

The edge sucks. Jack White is talented but he's not exceptional or anything.

Jimmy Page is on the Mount Rushmore of all time guitarists.

So I'll say it again:
That documentary was watching two guys who wish they were masters watch a true perfect artist show them what it means to excel.

And I absolutely agree with your assessment of The Weight. That's one of my all time favorite songs and it so unbelievably cringy in It Might Get Loud. The production team should've left that on the cutting room floor.

Both Jack White and The Edge are actually pretty similar despite their contrasting styles. Both artists are defined more by their innovative uses of effects than their technical proficiency. Another guitarist in that category is Tom Morello. The edge is all about reverb and delay to create these interesting repeating jangly riffs. White is all about fuzz, octaves, and creating unique lo-fi tones with gnarley bends. It’s pretty hard to say which one is actually better because neither one is really showing off their actual playing as much as their ability to create interesting sounds.

When I say that Jack is the standard bearer of rock, it’s essentially by default. There’s not a lot of exceptional guitarists making original relevant music right now, as current “rock” music really isn’t particularly shreddy or even guitar driven at all.

Imo, Jack is a better songwriter, and U2 is lame, but that’s just my opinion.

Except thats not how he broke on the scene... it was a pretty underground, word of mouth rise... he wrote good songs.. and those first couple of white stripes records were great.. If anything, I think his personal PR machine was kinda bad as he started to get fame.. he came off kinda dickish..

Nobody really cares if he's the most proficient guitar player, except guitar nerds... its about the songs..

That’s a shame. I understand it’s a common sentiment but it’s one I find perplexing and depressing. I wish Jack White wasn’t the default thought when you think young (too young for classic rock)guitarists. It should be more along the lines of:

Matt Jalbert
Andrew Stockdale
Davy Knowles
Gary Clark Jr

I know GVF is shite on a lot on this board but Jake Kiszka is only 24 and he’s extremely talented.

Funny you mention Gary Clark Jr., because if you knew anything about guitar, you’d recognize that GCJ isn’t exactly a great guitarist either. He’s known for his songwriting and tasteful playing, not for being able to play complicated stuff. I might be a better guitarist than Gary, and I’m not that good. However, Gary has the right songwriting to pair with his voice to be an underground success in music. I will give him credit for being less effects driven than a lot of his contemporaries. He’s not hiding his simple riffs and progressions behind a massive pedal board, but instead trying to infuse emotion and taste to make up the difference in complexity. There’s no complex jazz chords, speedy runs, or scales beyond simple blues pentatonic or major/minor, but there’s real feeling.

Agreed. He’s very good for his age and has some impressive rhythm riffs. I would like to hear what he would sound like doing more lead-style soloing, but he’s definitely one to watch.

I know plenty about guitar. Can we discuss music or do you want to have a dick measuring contest? For what it’s worth, I respect your opinion on this board and have for years. Most of what you post I agree with. Don’t be an a-hole,man.

And if I took that comment the wrong way, I apologize.

I didn’t say he was. I said I wish people thought of him instead of Jack White when they thought of young guitarists.

Something I find missing in most new music I listen to. Much of it just sounds like souless washed nonsense. It’s one of the reasons I like Gary. You can tell when you watch a live concert someone who puts their heart in it and someone who is just playing an instrument. GCJ never fails to move me when he’s playing. He’s got an intangible quality of adding soul to his music. Not everyone can do that.

It’s also a reason I’m a big fan of GVF. Those kids are very obviously loving what they do and they put their heart into their music. I hope they continue to evolve and grow because they have tons of potential.

Oh wow I've never heard this kind of sound from him before! He's from the white stripes isn't he? I can dig it!
