What would be your top 10 albums by the Big Four of Thrash?

First off, I don't necessarily agree that Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax are definitively the best four bands of thrash metal. However, I will acknowledge the fact that these groups are universally recognized as the most successful and most influential bands of the genre.
The order of my top 10 would change from day to day, but if I had to select ten albums that would certainly make the cut they would be:
Master of Puppets
Ride the Lightning
...And Justice for All
Show No Mercy
Reign in Blood
Seasons in the Abyss
Among the Living
Peace Sells
So Far...So Good...So What?!
Rust in Peace
I honestly feel bad for leaving off Persistence of Time, Fistful of Metal, and South of Heaven.

Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer are certainly the top 3. The fourth spot is debatable.

Cowboys from Hell is somewhat of a progressive thrash album, so there are definitely thrash elements found in each song.
Every album after was completely groove-driven and had departed from the thrash sound.

It's cool, man. That's what I thought you meant. I've never listened to the entire album but Anthrax just doesn't seem the same with Bush instead of Belladonna. Belladonna probably has more range than any other singer in the Big 4 and is one of the many reasons why Anthrax always sounded a little different from the other groups.

Kreator's sound always seemed too dissonant for me. The drums on Pleasure to Kill are particularly hard on the ears when you compare it to the double bass sound that Rick Rubin and Scott Burns managed to capture.
Show No Mercy is definitely the most classic-sounding album that Slayer released, but the poor production values make it hard for me to regard it as their best work.
I can definitely agree with the latter two.

Yeah it was hard for me to pick between Kreator and Death Angel, we just always listend to Kreator. I still listen to Show No Mercy more than any of the other Slayer albums to this day because of when it came out and what it did for the scene (and every song is great).

I like some early Death Angel too, and once Kreator refined their sound I found them to be pretty enjoyable.
I will admit that it took me a long time to ever give Show No Mercy a true shot, but it has definitely grown on me.
Also, Sepultura is my favorite non-American thrash group. I know people like to shite on them for every album after Arise, but they were just as heavy as anyone during that time. Plus, Max Cavalera and Andreas Kisser form one of the absolute best guitar duos in all of metal.

frickin' right, man. I love that entire record.
I'll match you by saying that the title track to Arise is one of the heaviest album openers that I know.

What's crazy is to think that they shifted from a near death metal sound on the first EP and LP, to thrash on the next three records, to groove on Chaos A.D., and finally to a sound that encapsulated their Brazilian roots and the ever-evolving metal scene of the period on Roots Bloody Roots.
I'll match you by saying that the title track to Arise is one of the heaviest album openers that I know.

I just can't bear the thought of a Sepultura line-up that doesn't include Max Cavalera. The fact that both brothers are no longer a part of the band only makes it worse.
It's instances like these where I wish musicians would simply change the name of the band once the majority of the original musicians have left. You can still play material from the old band but don't try to perform under the guise that you are the same band that you were 20 years ago.

Exodus and Napalm Death have no original members, and haven't in quite some time, yet no one complains about them needing to change their name or quit or whatever.

Good point.
I'll admit that I can't really stand grindcore, and therefore I wasn't even aware of that fact about Napalm Death.
It is sad to think of Exodus without Gary Holt. Then again, as a guitarist would you turn down the opportunity to tour with Slayer?

I'm just saying metal bands have a long history of being successful through multiple lineup changes. Black Sabbath has had 4 or 5 singers, Iommi was putting out new Sabbath music into the 90s with a completely different lineup. Maiden and Priest have both had a few different singers too. I don't understand how people complain about Sepultura or AIC but not all these other bands.

The Black Sabbath thing is ludicrous. However, the 1986 album Seventh Star bore the credits Black Sabbath featuring Tony Iommi. I guess that was their attempt to clarify that Iommi was the only remaining member at the time.
However, Maiden retained the core group of their lineup after Dickinson departed. Harris, Murray, and the second drummer McBrain have been together since Piece of Mind, and Harris is the founding member of the group.
Tipton, Downing, and Hill also remained with Judas Priest through the years. Although, I can certainly side with you on the band changing their name after Halford left.
The difference between Iron Maiden and Judas Priest is that the former gained notoriety with their second singer (after two albums were released), while the latter was made famous with their original singer.
