Oh, yeah, I totally forgot the most underrated lyricist of the 90s, Mr. Matt Talbot.

quote:

I took a worn out strand of your cellophane hair and stretched it sideways
And though my mind slipped through between the sea with me

My brain stopped working from the cold
I sort of strayed from what we know

So I'll be like you and I'll do what's right
And win a love I don't deserve out on the ice tonight
Teach me the bluest song you know
The moon ain't comin' up
And I swear to God tonight it feels like snow

Glad we got your hands warm so my arms can feel like trust again
I can promise true waves when the summer comes
The world still fits the same form we engraved when it all began
Maybe catch a new wave
Feels right
Feels right

So we ride whales and drag race time
And knock the fires from the traces of trilobite hives

You sleep like God inside her womb
And you see clearly to the silicon wasteland they left inside my mind

Glad we got your hands warm
So my arms can feel like trust again
I can promise true waves when the summer comes
The world still fits the same form we engraved when it all began
Maybe catch a new wave

We've lost the road now
Inject the charms
And we care for all of ours

We stand in rows now
Transfer alarms
Just like the Inuit with the promise song to come down and see

(Your solvents frozen here on the petal rung
Is all we have to see
Enlarged inside as we espy the warming sea.

(Your breath diffused and never realized
Aside from where the panicked hide
And I, just a subtle lift
Provider on the other side)

quote:

Morning scatters in and I am steady like a drug feeling out this one
She wakes up smashed as hell and steadies her arse against the rail and bends before the pounding rain

She had the widest bright ideas all along about my love
And I need this fricking fix and I beg her
to pick from one of the billion ways to feel no pain

The morning after bends reflected and I can hardly stand the way this whole thing makes me seem
She climbs out from a dream with lungs hardly as she screams a stereo scream and bends before astounding rain

She's got a system made of metal and magnet bits inside a brain
She opens her box of tricks and begs me to pick from one of the billion ways to feel no pain

She had the widest bright ideas
That all the world would sleep away until the nightmare ends
everyone is on
wait, wait on the end,
Hold me upright, let me breathe now

She had the widest bright ideas
That all the world would sleep away until the nightmare ends
everyone is on
wait, wait on the end,
Hold me upright, let me breathe now!

I don't find a lot of truth in his lyrics.

When I say truth, in this context, I am referring to Boyd's truth. How he is feeling, what he is thinking at the time.

You seem to think he is putting on an act. Some sort of contrivance to appear deep. That's not what I'm getting out of it. But hey, in some sense, you may be right.

quote:

He seems to harp really big on this preachy "the world is out to get you and your creative mind" thing that gets old fast.

On this point, I will link this article by John Taylor Gatto. This may just be another difference in perception. Some feel like their creativity is constrained, others don't.

quote:

No, I haven't. Those lyrics suck.

Well, in my view, you have, but we can just agree to disagree on this.

For the most part, I have enjoyed your posts in this thread.

Crush lyrics

That time i mentioned i was moving
And you said you'd help me move
I almost went out and bought some shite
So i'd need your help to move
Cause i got a crush on you
Remember that Halloween when i went as Jimmy Dean
You were a princess, or a gypsy, or whatever
I was James Dean
And i had a crush on you
I get a yes, a no, a maybe
From the magic 8 ball of your mind
I saw your mom's Camaro
Dammit girl you lookin fine
And i got a crush on you
Day in, day out, same routine
Better know what you think before you say what you mean
Same old, same old, season after season
Baby you're the kind of thing i do without reason
The sky's an 80 ft. mirror
With a fancy bevelled edge
Couldn't make it any clearer
I'm alone on this ledge
Just me and my crush on you
Teen-age hair-dos, bad leather
Mom's apartment, ethyl cans
I wa-wa-wa-wa-wanna
Take you to the dance
Cause i got a crush on you
Some girls make me reach for the bottle
Some girls make me reach for the sky
You got me reaching in every direction for
Just one good reason why
I gotta have this crush on you
That time i mentioned i was moving
And you said you'd help me move

Whiskey Grove

My name is Miguel Simone
A man who walked it alone
At least that's what it says on the stone under the sycamore
My mother was dead by the time I was born
In the black of my eyes the gypsy nurse warned
She could already see my path torn between the sun and the moon
So I walked it and I walked it straight
Until I passed through so many a gate
That not even the blame and the hate of my father could follow
So roll me into my last shallow bed
Use carpenter tacks in the lid
Waste not the silk on my head my lover has wove
See that no roses touch my grave
No prayers to a god I never forgave
No final wishes, save that you
Bury my body and me down by Whiskey Grove
I once knew the love of a wife
Sometimes the nectar, sometimes the knife
But it always seemed that my life was lived alongside of things
Three children born one hot July
She clutched the one that did not die
The heat and the light just passed by as I carried the other two -
I still carry the other two
I've seen the place where the daylight was killed
And the blood of a blue moon lay spilled
Where hearts go quiet, memory stilled, rest is bestowed
It's a place where the cup passeth over for good
And even Jesus would've hid if he could
In that forsaken stretch of wood they call Whiskey Grove
My name is Miguel Simone
A man who walked it alone
At least that's what it says on my stone under the sycamore

Lyle Lovett, If I had a boat

If I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat

If I were Roy Rogers
I'd sure enough be single
I couldn't bring myself to marrying old Dale
It'd just be me and trigger
We'd go riding through them movies
Then we'd buy a boat and on the sea we'd sail

And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat

The mystery masked man was smart
He got himself a Tonto
'Cause Tonto did the dirty work for free
But Tonto he was smarter
And one day said kemo sabe
Kiss my arse I bought a boat
I'm going out to sea

And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat

And if I were like lightning
I wouldn't need no sneakers
I'd come and go wherever I would please
And I'd scare 'em by the shade tree
And I'd scare 'em by the light pole
But I would not scare my pony on my boat out on the sea

And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat

Survivor Blues
Artist: Cory Branan
Album: Mutt

She warned him once about her luck,
Put out her match with a tear.

She said "I'm bored to death, and born to...
Look, you want way the hell away from here?"

He said "you don't look that tough to me."
He leaned and lit a cigarette.
"How bout you wait to see just what you regret,
'till we get what we get."('till we get what we get)

Does it make you stronger?
First you gotta survive...
What didn't kill you'll make you wish you'd died. (X2)

She struggled to read his knuckle tattoos,
beneath the ring and the scar.
But the left said Love, the right read True,
She said "Please say you got a car."

"It's parked out back, pointed outta state,
it's a recent acquisition, should probably ditch the plates."
"And it won't get me far enough to ever lose track...
but yeah it's plenty car enough for never comin' back."

Does it make you stronger?
First you gotta survive.
What didn't kill you'll make you wish you died. (X2)

"Yellow duffel in the seat back yonder,
bunch of pretty junk I bought her,
yours if you want;
either to you or the flames,
to me it's the same."

And she said "No thanks man,
my baggage is packed,
the name on my ankle,
the knife in my back..."

"But I know a place on our way outta town,
it's as good as burned down."(as good as burned down,
it's as good as burned...)

Does it make you stronger?
First you gotta survive.
What didn't kill you(will make u wish u'd), what didn't kill you,
what didn't kill you... Will make you wish you'd died.

You call that scar,
a bruise, a tear,
pillowmarks,
souveniers.

Wow. I haven't heard of many of these. I have a lot of new music to listen to.

This thread has turned out much better than I thought it would, but bobbyray21 hasn't chimed in.

He started the debate that led to this thread.
