What is with the constant referencing of other songs in modern country music?
Well, he played an old tune they called the "Soldier's Joy"
And he played the one they called the "Boston Boy"
Greatest of all was the "Jennie Lynn"
**... him and about a dozen more doing this one since the 1940's.

What's the alternative? Pick up truck, mud, full moon, steak on the grill, ice cold Bud Light, ice cold Coors, ice cold Miller Lite, moonshine, whiskey, jeans, boots, that pretty dress, church, your girl, my girl, mountains, rivers, lakes, parties, Momma, church, Jesus..............

A lot of current Nashville-produced shite is just hip hop for people who don't want to listen to black people.

How about referencing other artists. Luke Bryan’s latest single name checks Kenny Chesney. It annoys me not because I don’t like country radio but because it makes me feel old.

Music video, really did a lot of damage to songwriting, as far as craft is concerned, even though it may have been good for music sales and earnings.
Back in the day, you did your best to build your songs in a way that would cause the listener to sort of visualize by imagination. It's something that I still try to do. The videos kind of took that part of the craft away, as requirement for many.

It's actually a mashup of Werewolves and SHA, IMHO.
The irony is that Zevon's Play it All Night Long is a rather brutal satire of Sweet Home Alabama - he hated the song because of the shot it took at Neil Young.
"Sweet home Alabama"
Play that dead band's song
Turn those speakers up full blast
Play it all night long
Play It All Night Long

Yeah, well, look how that turned out.
