3. The improvisational nature of the songs (i.e. the jamming). People find this a lot more interesting than hearing short, well-polished live versions that mimic studio work. Losing yourself in a jam is one of life's great joy's IMO. Jamming also allows the musicians showcases their skills. Which leads to the next point..

This hits it on the head, urinetrouble. And, like HeadyBrosevelt was suggesting Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis, that's a huge part of what I enjoy about jazz. In the words of Wynton Marsalis, "We are free to improvise and invent the world of our choosing," and improvisational music reflects that.

And what's with the WSP hate? I've seen them two or three times at festivals I was otherwise already attending, and I enjoyed their sets. I'm not a big fan though and haven't kept up with any of their stuff really.

WSP is the worst jam band in the scene. There is nothing innovative about them. Just the same untalented geezers playing the same shitty venues.

You were probably on a litany of drugz. I would forget you said this and move on with your life. Don't look back. Ever.

Haha, that wasn't the case. They just seem "ok" to me. I enjoyed the sets -- and I often dislike at least some of the music I hear at a festival -- and they were never great enough for me to feel like I had to go dig into their work and discover the music more. So, yeah, I can see what y'all're saying, I just wasn't aware of it at all.

At this point they're just a fun/energetic show and unless you already don't like them (which is the case with many on here) you will most likely have a good time. They're past their prime but what jam band isn't these days?

Today, I'm jamming to a new album from Medeski, Scofield, Martin & Wood.

Medeski, Scofield, Martin & Wood - Juice (album released September 16, 2014; steam via Spotify)

I think we can argue about this particular band and where their prime is, but the jam-band genre as a whole seems healthy and alive to me. Powerhouse artists like these are still churning out great albums, and up-and-comers are exploring the landscape.

How many Sweet Jimmy Carter & The Outlaws shows have you been to?

I'm on the fence about Dopapod. They had a good set at Wakarusa but some of their stuff from a few years ago weren't that great. So I think they are getting better.

Tauk is a great show to go see. 4 very talented musicians. Their set at Lockn' was one of my favorites of the weekend.
