What genre do these bands fall under? They're all kind of rapish (not rapeish) with full bands instead of just samples/tracks/whatever "real" rap has.
N.E.R.D.
Flobots
2 Skinnee J's

how could you ask this question without including the head and shoulders best band in the genre?

I intentionally didn't mention them.
For a reason.
Because they suck.

Hip hop/rap can still use live instruments.

you and i are obvisouly thinking of different bands, because THE ROOTS are amazing. and by far the best live instrumentation hip hop act and nobody else is even in the conversation.
im almost scared to know what band you were thinking about.

Linkin Park
I was just listening to Organix this morning too.
ETA: I thought you were being sarcastic in your original response.

Not sure about the other 2 but N.E.R.D. isn't really considered hip hop. Don't really know what you'd call it. It's a huge change from what the Neptunes do as a production team.

Need more MCs spitting over live instrumentation. Curren$y did some lately. Jay did the unplugged thing. I just think it is refreshing when an MC uses a band.
there are always tons of guest on their albums. undun had big krit and phonte plus dice raw, p.o.r.n. and truck north which are roots family. other albums have had blu, peedi crack, mos def, styles p, saigon, talib kweli, common, wale, devin the dude, jean grae, skillz and beanie sigel just to name a few.
plus all the rappers theyve backed on late night.

J. Cole now performs with a live band, and a lot of what he does is over live instrumentation on his albums and mixtapes.

Lupe performs with a band. Just a random fact.

I think I've seen The Roots live 8 times. I've lost count.

I've never seen K'naan live, but I'm gonna make an educated guess that he uses a band.

Im in the same boat, ive seen them close to ten times. Unbelievable live show, by far the best hip hop show out there.

People don't realize how important The Roots have been and are for hip hop. The first Hip Hop Band. The numerous artists they have back at live shows. It gives non hip hop fans a chance to see their is real art going on.

Excellent point.
I saw them in philly a few years ago around christmas time and they had a ton of people cycle through and they backed all of them. The show was over 3 hours.
