I was watching E! True Hollywood Story last night and i've seen his show Ice & Coco, and he always is acting like he's the Godfather of Gangster rap and he infers constantly that he invented gangster type rap. He gained some press with the song cop killer, but i've been listening to rap since waaaay back in the day and nobody i know has ever broken out a old ice-t album. Is he a poser?

he was selling out before selling out was cool, remember him being in New Jack City as a cop? I just didn't know if i was missing something with him being a rapper, he's always talking about how he started the whole thing, yet i can't name a song. Plus he was in the ARmy, i highly doubt they put up with hardcore gangster rappers in the service as he claims to be. the whole thing is very Rick Rossish

I am a nightmare walking, psychopath talking
King of my jungle just a gangster stalking
Living life like a firecracker quick is my fuse
Then dead as a deathpack the colors I choose
Red or Blue, Cuz or Blood, it just don't matter
Sucker die for your life when my shotgun scatters
We gangs of L.A. will never die - just multiply

Essentially no meaningful contribution.

I'm not really one to make an argument in the rap genre but Colors(movie and soundtrack) seemed like a big deal when it came out.

He was definitely doing gangsta rap before there was gangsta rap. He was one of those guys radio actively fled from. Then he upped the ante and formed a metal band ("Cop Killer" is not a rap song, its a metal song by Body Count). A few years later, he was doing TV and movies, while a genre he practically founded without industry or radio support was the most popular thing in the country. He got out right before it blew up.

Ice T wasn't a great rapper, but he's not lying about his influence or the way the industry studiously ignored him. In fact, he found most of his early support from punks and metalheads.

i guess he's made a living so more power to him, i just don't consider him a piller of the gangster rap genre, but maybe he has a place there somewhere.

i'm not trying to flame or whatever, but when i think of the original gangsters rappers, i think n.w.a. dre, too short, geto boys(texas),ect, he may have been rapping but was he as influential as he claims to be? i've never heard another rapper talk about looking at ice-t as the founder of the west coast gangster rap scene, but maybe i'm wrong.

Ice T deserves to be up there IMO. As Baloo mentioned, I was a punk/metal fan at the time and there was something about his style that drew me into gangster rap. I listened to the entire OG album way more than I probably should have. It was right up there with Straight Outta Compton and The Chronic.

while we are on the subject, who gets credited for being the original gangster rappers, east coast or west, i have to go with west coast, when i saw dre and snoop, (even though i know it wasn't one of the first gangster rap songs)in the 187 video, i was thinking aww shite this is some gangster shite going on right here. at the time when i thought of east coast rap i thought of will smith

man, in '86 Dre was still wearing lipstick

Damn it's a trip how a n**** could switch so quick from wearing lipstick to smoking on Chronic at picnics

As to the OP:

Ice-T was my favorite rapper for most of my childhood. Started listening to his stuff around '91 or so. 'Power' is probably his best all around album, although 'OG' stands out for some really strong individual songs. He kind of teetered off after that, but no one should deny his immense contribution to the genre of gangsta rap.
