The only common ground in music between my parents and I are:

The Beatles
Simon and Garfunkel
Some Jazz

Most of the stuff that they like I don't care too much for. My mom listened to top 40 "from the 70's, 80's, 90's, and today!" Most of it was crap but there were a couple good tunes. My dad listened to a lot of classical music when I was growing up, which I hated, and still don't care too much for.

I'm a lot older than most of you in here. I grew up listening to the Beatles, Stones, British Invasion, Beach Boys and then progressed to the heavier "classic" rock such as Hendrix, ABB, CCR, Santana, etc. But growing up I caught a lot of my parents' music from the Big Band/Swing era. Glenn Miller, Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey, Bennie Goodman, Woody Herman, Harry James, etc. Most of that stuff would be featured in Kafka's Great American Songbook thread.

My mother always listened to pop radio when I grew up in the 60's, so I knew all the great psych, garage, Motown, etc. of the era. Of course, she loved Elvis too, what woman of her time didn't? My sister, when I was real young, had a ton of 45's from N.O. RnB soul of the late 50's/early 60's, along with Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, etc. And of course, she listened to a lot of 60's psych. My dad grew up listening to Big Bands of his day, also country like Hank Williams, Sr. But my dad, even at 90 years old today, still recognizes how great the Beatles were too...

Mostly country. My Dad sang and played the guitar and he'd do traditional country songs like "Stay All Night", couple Merle Haggard songs and some Charlie Pride like "Crystal Chandelier". He also had opera training so he'd walk around the house belting out Arias.

My main influences from my Dad were James Taylor and Tom Petty, which I listen to, along with some other classic rock. I didn't get much from my mom.

Dad played the drums and mom played the guitar, both up until the end of college, I guess. They don't play anymore. My siblings don't play.
