I love these threads.

Every band that becomes popular, well known or makes money does so because they want to be popular, well known and make money. Every. Single. One.

There's nothing wrong with that. Honest to God, I can't think of a single artist who has had any degree of commercial success who doesn't have at least some fans who claim that artist has "sold out". The term is completely and utterly meaningless.

You could view that as selling out or as maturation. It really comes down to "do I like this or not?"

This. Not that I hold Don Henley up as any great example of a cutting edge artist, but he had one of the great responses to similar criticism: "If the charge is playing in tune and in time, I plead guilty".

I think I've said this in several threads, but the whole notion of "selling out" is pretty silly. IMO selling out is compromising your integrity as an artist by making music for the sole reason of being popular and for the money. Some artists choose to let their music be part of movies, commercials, ads, etc and people complain that they have sold out. I think that's dumb and how can you fault someone for accepting praise / money for music that you made? But how can you really know if an artist has in fact "sold out"? It's impossible in most cases because most artists don't reveal their true intentions. So what if The Black Keys changed their sound to be more pop? Maybe that sound is what they were interested in doing and how can you fault them? If you don't like it because it's popular, then that's silly.

Metallica sold out. They're my favorite example.
