Maps is great but you weren't paying enough attention if you think those were the dark ages

For pop music and / or "alternative" music, yes. This era saw the rise of nu metal like you mentioned, as well as the rise in popularity of such bands as Nickelback, Staind, Creed, OAR, Hoobastank, Buckcherry, Fuel, Panic at the Disco, Puddle of Mudd, etc.

But there are some amazing albums that also came out during that timeframe that didn't quite make it as much into the mainstream.

I blame clearchannel for screwing up radio. The early and mid 90's had some awesome popular music. It went to crap after Clearchannel took over most radio stations.

ETA - basically what Seaward said

Well I more just meant that at that point I really felt like okay we're past that era, it had been improving for awhile by the time Maps came out though, you're right.

Gotcha. Never forget the first time I heard Hard to Explain by the strokes. Hated Last Nite but that one did it for me

Disco and rap/hip hop is the worst garbage that I have ever heard.

I would agree but I remember hearing the Bee Gees "unplugged" it sounded pretty darn good. It was very surprising

there's tons of great music out there now, albeit you have to go looking for it.

Do you have to type this out every time or do you have it pre-written somewhere so you can just cut and paste?

pre-disco Bee Gees have excellent catalogue of pop music songs.

Also my comment on the late 80s being the worst period of music got several downvotes, yet not one reply to defend their opinion... oooo k

Yes, I remember that. I was a kid when it was original. But my post was mainly referring to my hearing them play their disco SNF songs unplugged and actually enjoying it. (I felt a little guilty even, and surely didn’t tell any friends .... loss of man card points and all.)

With all the bitching about how music hasn't been good since blah blah blah (something that's been said since...forever), I sure hope so.

Gotta agree with ya. 90’s grunge and hard rock was the best and it all went to shite after that. I did listen to disturbed a little bit but it went downhill fast.

I spent a lot of that time as a late elementary/middle school student listening to Green Day and Blink 182 while trying to figure out how to skateboard.

Sleep - Dopesmoker & Mastodon - Leviathan, two of the greatest albums of all time came out in that time period.

Great time for music.
