I think the music board are generally big fans, except for some jazz purists who think they are lame and yacht rocky, as well as Kafka who just thinks Fagen is a dork.

I'm just old enough to remember "Steely Dan transcends mere Rock -- it is Art!" cult. I always found that sort of fanboy worship out of place for a pleasant enough pop rock band.

I think Fagen today sounds like a douche towards those fans, making jokes about their age. It's like William Shatner ridiculing Trekkies -- were would he be without them?

I am 57 years old and have moved on to 90's grunge and today's new rock. Steely Dan is the only rock group from my youth that I would even consider listening to nowadays.

I read his book and came away understanding just how screwed up this guy really is. To begin with he's extremely paranoid and fears that he may find himself in a conversation with a fan. He writes that he's never felt comfortable listening to someone heap adulation on him and doesn't really understand it.

He talks about sleeping on the bus versus even risking checking into his hotel room for fear of running into someone wearing a Steely Dan T Shirt.

Oh and by the way, Deacon Blues is one of the greatest songs ever written/recorded.

I'm a huge Steely Dan fan, though I didn't get into it until i was in college circa 1990. But I do agree there are Dsn "fan boys" that are very annoying. Fan boys of anything are annoying really

I'm in my late 40's and am usually one of the youngest at Steely Dan shows, so i do kind of get it. I've never really been one to want to meet celebrities who's art i like. I imagine it gets old and maybe uncomfortable having over excited people clamoring over you.

I'm 55, didn't really like them in high school. I appreciate them more now, but I'm not in the slobbering adulation crowd.

I don't see how you cannot like Steely Dan. I am not some drooling fan, but their first 5 were very well done.

Back in 1978, not many were listening to the Clash and Steely Dan.

They also do a great job of making fun of themselves. My favorite is the taped show from NYC at Sony Studios. The camera crew is outside doing interviews with folks waiting to get in when they ask this chick what her favorite SD song is. She gushes and says, "I just love Year of the Cat."

How many acts would allow something like that to be aired.

Side 1 of Aja--Black Cow, Aja, and Deacon Blues is in my top 5 album sides of all time. I could loop that all day.

Interesting article on the Eight Minutes of Genius that is the song "Aja".
