Some of these are pure pop gems written by up-and-comers of their day. Many have cool musical connections with accomplished artists. Some were covered years later by other popular artists.

"Love Is All Around" - Hüsker Dü

The theme song for the Mary Tyler Moore Show was written by Sonny Curtis, childhood friend of Buddy Holly, as well as, his guitarist; he also wrote one of the most covered songs of all time..."I Fought the Law."

The Will-O-Bees - "The Ugliest Girl In Town"

A very short lived sitcom that would be totally forgotten if not for the fact that its premise was later completely ripped off by Tootsie. We might also remember its very catchy theme song, with lyrics by Howard Greenfield (co-writer of Neil Sedaka's hits).

I always loved "WKRP in Cincinnati," but while most people dug the cool opening theme, I always hung around for the closing end theme; a meaty air guitar worthy gem. Only problem was I could never figure out the lyrics.

Well looky what I found!

"WKRP in Cincinnati" end theme lyrics.

Sanford and Son.

Also known as "The Streetbeater," composed by Quincy Jones from his 1973 LP "You've Got it Bad, Girl."
Great bass line, and that cowbell at the break!
And his has lyrics; here's Ella Fitzgerald's cover.

The Theme Song to Peter Gunn by Henry Mancini, 1959. It reached number 8 on billboard.

YT

I'm old enough to remember watching the TV show.

Other versions charted

Duane Eddy, 1959, no 27 on Billboard
Deodato, 1976, no 84 Billboard
Art of Noise (feat. Duane Eddy), 1986, No 50 on Billboard

This version is my favorite by the Buddy Morrow Orchestra, 1959. This arrangement is more upbeat and to me for lack of better words is fuller and richer. We had this album at home some I'm prejudiced (I think I may still have it).

Buddy Morrow Version YT.

Did you ever watch Johnny Staccato? That's my favorite private eye show of the era.

It also has a memorable theme song, by Elmer Bernstein, reminiscent of his theme for The Man With The Golden Arm.

The guy who replaces Cassavetes on the piano @ 2:20 is a young fellow named Johnny Williams, who would later write the music for a little movie called Star Wars.

Sad to say I don’t remember that one. I remember M Squad and Naked City . My favorite crime show was The Untouchables. Thinking back, I think I liked watching these shows with my dad. So I guess my favorites were the shows he liked. However, to stay in the spirit of the music board, the old shows were strong in using “big band” type orchestras for themes and soundtracks. Whenever I record and watch an old show I pick up on the old style band music and I miss it.

Have Gun Will Travel theme song

Johnny Western wrote the song, but note how Richard Boone and producer Sam Rolfe put their names on the writing credit

Star Trek theme w/lyrics

As all Trekkies know, creator Gene Roddenberry wrote lyrics for the Star Trek theme (which he never intended to be heard publicly) in order to receive half the music royalties -- a legal but not terribly ethical tactic which did not endear him to composer Alexander Courage.

The lyrics:

Beyond
The rim of the star-light
My love
Is wand'ring in star-flight
I know
He'll find in star-clustered reaches
Love,
Strange love a star woman teaches.
I know
His journey ends never
His star trek
Will go on forever.
But tell him
While he wanders his starry sea
Remember, remember me.
