What are some good songs or albums I should start with?

Carnival 99, 02 rhythm of the road at tabernacle, 06 stubbs bbq and Austin city limits are some of my favorites.
Eta: do you like bluegrass or more jam?

I like both, but prefer jam.

Check out some sets on youtube and go from there. I'd suggest electric forest sets. Maybe some hornings hideout, lockn if you can find em. Hulaween I know all the sets are on there from over the years.
Carnival 99 is where I personally would start though.

I really like some of their early stuff, 97-98. it's more bluegrass. early 2000s they turned into Phish-lite. nothing wrong with it, just a totally different direction.

I agree with this. Their early stuff is tolerable if you like bluegrass. Not great, but not terrible. I saw them in 2001 and all I kept thinking the entire show was Kang was trying too hard to sound like Trey. It just didn't work. Then the lead singer guy brought out a jellyfish marionette and started dancing around with it while singing that awful song and I had to bail.
Here's the setlist from that show. No idea if it's a good show. I wasn't impressed.
Set One
On the Road, Joyful Sound, Round the Wheel, Dudley's Kitchen, Lost > Latinissmo, White Freightliner Blues > Howard Jam > Jellyfish > Shine
Encore
How Mountain Girls Can Love, Chameleon, Rollover > Tom Thumb's Blues > Rollover

Agreed. Like most jam bands, their albums are mostly crap. They're excellent live though.

You should give them another shot. Had plenty of wsp and older phish fans who couldn't stop raving about the show they saw this weekend. There ain't no party like a string cheese party. I also know everyone likes different music so to each their own but if you go to a show now and can't have fun, you probably just suck at life.

joyful noise, colorado bluebird sky, and good times around the bend are at least starting points.

Their live CD series was called "On the Road"...I have a bunch and prefer '02...IMO, a stellar year for them.
Pick a show and listen.

I don't really listen to them in my own time but have seen them a handful of times and the sets from Lockn1 (2013 I think). I remember as being pretty good and if you can find it, last nights show at Chastain Park was really good.
