Prog isn't even a genre. All music is progressive by nature. Always evolving.
one could say its all arbitrary to define a genre of music as "progressive", and it is, but it also makes it easy to categorize and define it. which is useful on an internet message board to debate and have discussion.
when someone says "prog rock", you know what bands and genre they're talking about. is the name kind of silly? maybe. but its a useful term

Early Rush doesn't suck.
Listen to La Villa Strangiato. That's the definition of prog to me.

And that's a good point I suppose.
Early Volta doesn't suck either. Everything before Pridgen has some amazing shite in it.

Bedlam in Goliath is fricking awesome. Pridgen brought them back from the dead, but the last album was terrible.

IMO: Giving credit to most of the originators. I hate leaving out fusion bands such as Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return to Forever and newer bands. Prog on..
1. Yes. Song craft plus the trio of Anderson/Howe/Squire were a core during the golden years.
2. King Crimson. Almost the opposite of Yes as Robert Fripp has been the only mainstay (and founder) through close to 50 years!
3. Genesis. The 2 albums after Gabriel left were great-after that they were just a pop band.
4. Jethro Tull-peaked at "Thick As a Brick" but continued into the late '70's with decent music such as "A Passion Play".
4. Kraftwerk-not the traditional Prog Rock band but started the synth movement.
5. ELP-great musicianship but had to rely only on one main songwriter and musician (Emerson).
6. Van der Graaf Generator. Top Italian prog rockers.
7. Gentle Giant-brought vocals and harmonizing into the scene.
8. Caravan-the top Canterbury band-full of melodies and fun lyrics.
9. Gong-ventured between jam rock and prog rock. Space out...
10. Porcupine Tree-one of my all time favorites and lucky enough to see them 4 times. Just at #10 because the newer bands deserve a ranking all there own.
Among a few of the other bands I've enjoyed that are in the classic prog rock mode are Camel, Soft Machine, Starcastle, Focus, Brand X, Moody Blues, Crack the Sky, Triumvirat, Kansas, Stomu Yamashta, UK, Hatfield and the North, Happy the Man, and Moody Blues, among others. All very different musically and enjoyable listening.

and modern art ended in the 1970's. But those comments are retarded because "Modern" and "Progressive" are used as a noun / a genre not an adjective which says that the art is modern or the rock is progressing.
So prog is in fact a genre.

Prog definitely exists to this day. It may have broadened its influences, but there is still a lot of really good prog out there.

I get where you were coming from and agree with your definition. Just inflicting life into a thread that was DOA while adding my own personal list.

Great list. I would have Supertramp on there somewhere though

Love your list, can't argue at all with that top 5, would have Zappa a little higher.
Your thoughts on Uriah Heep & Starcastle?
