I saw this some time back, but I'm just not sure on the whole thing. Follow me here, If you are going to go through all the trouble of writing, recording, and arranging a concept album with a spiraling Fibonacci sequence with hidden mathematical meaning in the timing of meters etc.
Why would you then mess it all up by shuffling the order of everything around for the official release? It seems like if I did this, I'd want it to be obvious that I was a genius.
My take? Tool's mystique has given rise to a legend that is bigger than what they actually are. Still, this whole exercise is interesting nonetheless.

Maynard has even said that it is for your own interpretation and he purposely writes lyrics with multiple meanings.

it seems that they used some kind of mathematic theory to track the songs in the order of the theory.

Yeah, but only where it was convenient to do so. If you read to the end of that post in the first link the author raises some interesting points.

They're numerologists, anyway - at least Carey is. I'm still blown away by the fact that he can play a different time signature than the rest of them, inluding D'Amour/Chancellor, and it still all make sense musically - on top of the fact that most of their songs are irregular in signature, anyway. As a former drummer wannabe, I have a difficult time wrapping my mind around it.
