F' all this - saw Big Earl at the Flora Bama - both evening shows this weekend - FTMFW. Based on what I heard about the Fest this year, I may have come out with the better deal. Guess the BP funds are drying up to support the Fest or someone's having fun with the remaining proceeds...

She does that at basically every show apparently. Look up "Talking Body Live at Rock in Rio Las Vegas" go to the 2:55 mark.

Well, I went down expecting to not be blown away by the Fest, because I wasn't crazy about the big acts. I forgot that, for my personal tastes, I don't actually go to festivals to see the big acts. The thing, for me, that makes festivals so much fun is discovering new bands. On that level, this festival was a complete success. I got to see some badass bands I'd never seen before in fairly intimate settings and got to talk to quite a few of them.

The cool thing was that a lot of the smaller acts were all catching each other's shows, so you could hang out and chat with the bandmembers who were in the audience. So here were the "new" bands I discovered:

The Districts: these guys were solid as hell. They're on Fat Possum, so I shouldn't have been surprised and I probably should have already known about them.

J Roddy: he wasn't really a discovery, but his set did impress the hell out of me. Super high energy.

Young Fathers: I knew I was going to like these guys, because I'd been listening to them a lot, and they didn't disappoint. I kept comparing them to TVOTR, which feels like such a lame comparison (Oh, an indie hipster band with black guys in it? They're like TVOTR). But the comparison actually isn't a bad one as far as their sound. A little more hip hop flair than TVOTR, though.

Floating Action: judging by the amount of "industry" people at very sparsely attended show, these guys may be big. The guitarist for Father John Misty was there. Quite a few press people with cameras and press passes were there. The Districts were there. And Jim James came out and played Saxophone with them. We got to talk to the guys from the Districts for a while after this show. Super nice guys. Then we talked to Floating Action for a while as well. Trying to book both bands here for a local festival a buddy is putting together.

Natural Child: these guys were from Nashville, so the whole JEFF the Brotherhood, crew was in attendance as well as a bunch of other Nashville people. Talked to a chick about her Imogene + Willie jeans for a bit in this show. I think she thought it was weird that I immediately guessed she was from Nashville because of her jeans.

Anyway, I saw lots of the big acts as well, but enough has been written about them. Overall, it was a great time. My favorite performance was probably TVOTR, just because I"m a huge fan and had never seen them before. From all reports, festival attendance was down. I really think the Zac Brown Band and Sam Smith as headliners were very poor choices and screwed their sales. Hopefully they make better decisions in the future.
