Agreed on HELP. Every one points to Rubber Soul, with reason, but HELP was the beginning of their evolution.

quote:The level of 24/7 grind that went into The Beatles prior to anyone in America ever having heard of them is absurdly epic. They were poor and desperate. The Stones were comfortable and middle class - and they had The Beatles to lay all the groundwork for them - including writing their first hit song.
Prive me wrong. Stones would record and then go out on the road and deliver killer shows. The Beatles after 1966 could not be bothered with leving the studio. That makes the Rolling Stones "The Hardest Working Band in Show Business"
Show me where they shrugged off touring . Mick, Keith and Ronnie are still touring.
But even AFTER Beatlemania came stateside, their work rate was insane. In 1964 (the year that hit Sullivan), they recorded 2 new full-length albums AND made a feature film...all while touring like madmen.
Yes, it's true - by 1966, they had been utterly battered by the road in a way the Stones never really knew...so they stopped.

quote:But what's also interesting is Lennon's complete deconstruction of the doo-wop genre in one tune: Happiness is a Warm Gun.
record producers still managed to integrate pre-Beatles pseudo-doo wop stuff

"Deconstruction" or "demolition"?
Interesting for sure. Lennon did somehow transition that tune into doo-wop and typical chord structure. But almost as though he ran out of ideas as to wrap up the song.
Too each his own, and I know many love it, but my overall assessment of Happiness is a Warm Gun's composition would not be kind.

Btw, maybe you've misconstrued the gist of my post up-thread:
(DJs and record producers still managed to integrate pre-Beatles pseudo-doo wop stuff and instrumentals side by side along with the newer "Beatles-sound", modern guitars and baroque pop etc.)
I meant the integration of pre-1964 Beatles pop music style (still based largely on simple 50's chords and harmonies) to post-1964 style pop changes based on Beatles song structure (Byrds, Kinks, Who, Herman's Hermits etal.)

Music, like Food is an acquired taste. My ear and your ear may find common ground, but what's tasty is up to the beholder. As I mentioned up-thread, there is no "right or wrong" in musical preference. (unless it's rap
)
Lennon especially was easily bored. McCartney likewise. But at least they both extended their musical prowess into new horizons.

That's such a well recorded song. Jack Douglas was behind a lot of that.
