Really? (I didn't downvote, BTW.) From a productivity and influence standpoint, what you're suggesting is impossible.

Yes, Cream could play really well. Clapton clearly wanted to be in a band really badly, but it wasn't meant to be. Ironically, they could have brought in at least a half dozen drummers not named Ginger Baker and been fine. The whole band was built on a premise that destined them to fall - the egos were just too big, Baker's particularly.

they were all encompassing

Meh.

their breakup shocked the world.

The "World" was just starting to really pay attention. Yes, Wheels of Fire was like a nuclear blast, but, like a lot of things like this, just as it was getting traction, it was over.

And, I'll let you in on another secret, IF (big IF) there was a true musical genius in Cream? It was Bruce. Clapton flirted with it at times (mostly on blues guitar) and Baker was a virtuoso drummer, no doubt, but Bruce's overall ability remains the main reason to listen to Cream.

There - I said it.

What about Jim Gordon?

Undiagnosed schizophrenia + massive, massive, ill-advised drug abuse = Clapton's fault?

Not sure I buy that math.

I would've rather seen another Blind Faith album than another Cream one. While I like Jack Bruce, I love Winwood.

I tend to agree with this as well.

(ETA: This is more of a compliment to Winwood, than a compliment to Baker or a slight to Bruce, FWIW.)

Everybody hated everybody at some point. Jack Bruce’s best song was this 3 minute gem aimed at Clapton for screwing him outta Cream money

Even above that, I really wish Derek and the Dominos made a 2nd album.

Probably wouldn't have been as good as the Layla album, because that was truly lightning in a bottle.

As said, marvelous drummer. His arrogance is enough to make you sick. I would ask him what the hell he ever accomplished without Bruce or Clapton? He really needs to get over himself.

Vastly over-rated. He's still just a "drummer".

He's a pretty damned good drummer. He's cocky and he mocks other drummers considered the best of all time, but he might have a slight point. Not saying he's always right or head and shoulders above.

Bonham might be my favorite drummer. I like his style. I like how he plays. And he's overall great. Baker was a straight up jazz drummer who can do extremely difficult things. Watch the Beware of Mr Baker documentary. Guy would challenge other great jazz drummers to competitions. It's a much more technical style. Even Clapton is interviewed in the documentary and when they mention Bonham, Clapton immediately says it's not the same thing and you cant compre them, Baker was more than what he played in those Cream songs.

Now it's wrong to be cocky about being a rock drummer. Outside of maybe a few bands, you are easily interchangeable.

You said "just a drummer" but if you're going to be a good band, you need a good drummer.

I don't know about that. Some bands would be looking for that swag.

There's a famous story about Bernard Purdie that was told by Donald Fagen. He said Purdie would come into a session and set up two signs next to his drum kit. One sign said, "Now you done it"; the other said "You done hired the hit maker." Fagen said that's the sort of confidence they wanted.

Good God..........

The band formed in 1966. Nineteen fricking sixty six.

First ever platinum album was theirs (not the Beatles).

Four albums in what? Two and half, three years?

Already playing the Royal Albert Hall and touring the world.

They were a BIG deal.
