Tuscaloosa

been on hiatus for 4 years with a random show here and there

just opened for the alabama shakes again recently
lee bains is about to go on another tour, as well as bassist matt is with the drive by truckers.

from the nashville show:

quote:

Next up was The Dexateens, a band from Tuscaloosa, Alabama. I'm a huge fan of Drive-By Truckers, another band that identifies heavily with Alabama, and The Dexateens delivered a very similar sound to that better-known rock outfit. There was technical trouble during the band's first song when none of the microphones seemed to work. While many bands would have halted the show while a solution to the issue was found, The Dexateens were having none of that crap. The band powered through that song, quickly fixed the glitch, and roared into the second song before anyone really realized what was happening. The band plays like a runaway locomotive whose wheels are about to fly off at the next bend. They were sloppy, irreverent, and seemed to be playing for themselves, and I loved every second of it.

My buddy told me this last night. I'm pumped. The best band that no one has heard of, seriously.

I uploaded this on to youtube because there isnt that much of their studio stuff at all on there:

I planned on uploading more, but I haven't got around to it yet.

They play their music too loud live. Vibrates my nuts and makes me have to wear my mudflap hat.

Doc ... did you ever see Slobberbone? Probably were gone before you came along, but man they were good live. I booked them at the Moon and The Bayou in the late 90's while finishing college.

They are back together. Haven't seen them since the reunion but that got pretty crappy before the first breakup.

not sure how they were up to the breakup, but they were tough to beat in 99-2000. The killed it in the Bayou (still in my mind the best music venue BR history) .... right up there with the Art Bar.

They are great live, but its kind of hard to find a good, clean recording of their live stuff.

That one sounds good, though.

Ahh the Bayou..... But I thought the Chimes was generally better than the Bayou for seeing a band. That's when the Chimes was s small place. I saw so many great bands at the chimes.

naaaaah ..... the Bayou had it all. A dark dive bar with a diverse crowd, vinyl playing behind the bar, hot bartenders (for the 90's), pinball, great drink specials and legacy/tradition. the best bar in BR history and thankfully immortalized in Sex, Lies and Videotape. Not to mention the name and logo.

Some of naming M+W is a subtle tip of the cap to the Bayou name and tradition

I hung at the Bayou because of all those reasons. But for seeing a band, the Chimes had way more bands in my day than the Bayou. Although I did see a couple of pretty well known bands.....now well known....at the Bayou circa '83 and '85.

I have, a couple of times. Once at Egans, another time at the Bama theatre. The Bama Theatre show was great, Matt Patt showed up right as they were going on stage because his flight from wherever the Truckers played the night before was late. the Egans show was a shite show in normal Egans fashion.
