I was a huge fan of the Cars back in the day. I think I sort of fell out of love with them when Heartbeat City hit the stores. It was all digital, and David Robinson didn't even drum on that album. It was all drum machine. Panorama is a fun lesser known album.
On that Heartbeat City tour, dollar for dollar, they put on the weakest show I've ever seen. They only played for 45 minutes.

I never saw them live but a buddy of mine said the same thing about the live show... very short and disappointing. I like Heartbeat City ok but albums one and two are their best quality in my opinion. Touch and Go is one of my favorite Cars songs and saves Panorama.

It could be Touch and Go on whether or not they get in.

They were in the discussion for the best American pop band of their era.

Heartbeat City was the first vinyl LP I ever bought, and I still like it. Hello Again is just fricking awesome. It wasn't until the early 90s that I fell in love with their other albums. They're all classics in my book and I definitely agree with the OP that they deserve to get in the HOF, even though the HOF is just Jann Werner's personal club, really. So many great deserving bands have been passed by for lesser acts as to make it just a really good excuse to see an old favorite perform one more time or to see a new act do an awesome cover like when all the different women sang at Nirvana's induction.

Deservingly so. They were cool.

The Rock HOF is a complete and utter joke. The first couple of induction classes were spot on. After that, it became a quest for some sort of SJW or historical revisionists to redefine what rock music is/was all about, and when one compares a list of who is IN:
Green Day
Public Enemy
Donovan
Darlene Love
With those who are not:
Deep Purple
Yes
Cheap Trick
Iron Maiden
Def Leppard
And I could go on. Do The Cars deserve recognition? Sure - they are almost the prototypical college rock band who hit it big. Talented with a unique sound and 2 great singers (RIP Benjamin Orr).
But, being in or not being in is of no moment (although I do enjoy some of the great performances that inducted bands pull off - U2 - The End of the World, and all members of The Eagles performing) and of no significance to me.
One of the biggest musical crimes ever is letting the Rock HOF become a complete joke - but it certainly has.

No wonder I've never paid attention to it. What a crapshow.

I can pretty much justify Darlene Love and Donovan.
