What do you feel is the most significant and lasting impact that grew out of the music of the 1980s

The accidental discovery of gated reverb. Sound sampling becoming more affordable and diverse. Greater ability to record music remotely and not have to book weeks in a studio

it was a bridge to what we have today and the 90s

Then I'd happily drive that bridge back to the 70's.

80's gave rise to the college/indie label music.

I like the gated reverb post. Vox has a great peice about it about a year ago.

I'm with you on that. I have so many memories tied up in songs from the 80s and 90s.

I get your point because of what they became eventually. But they started as a college radio-played only band, and quickly took off from there.

Listen to Heart's Little Queen (1978), and if Heart just isn't your thing, bounce around the hits - Barracuda, Kick it Out and Little Queen. Flash forward to their eponymous comeback album from 1985 - now some of the personnel had changed but that was still the Wilsons and Leese with a different rhythm section. They outsourced some of the songwriting and it was a deliberate change up, but the 1985 album is almost the stereotypical 80s rock album, synth, polish, "glossy" sounding. And this was from a legitimate, crunchy mid/late 70s rock band that just happened to be led by girls.

ZZ Top followed the same formula, after being a power trio recording gritty Texas blues through out the 70s , they released "Eliminator" in the early 80s, loaded with synths and a more dance/pop feel, they returned to their original guitar driven sound on the albums in the 90s.
