Mine happened around 2 years ago. I went over to my dad's house to watch the Bama game and he was watching this older guy in concert. I had never heard a guy make a guitar sound this good. I asked my dad who he was. He said that's David Gilmour. Neeless to say, I've been a massive Floyd/Gilmour fan ever since and that made me go out and buy a Strat.

I don't have that one moment. When we watch home videos my dad is always either playing guitar or has classic rock playing in the background and I'm always next to him listening. He started teaching me when I was old enough to hold the guitar and I've been hooked ever since.

Have always been intrigued by playing guitar... there are old family pics of me with a ukulele when I was about 3-4.
I am a child of 70's rock, so if you're familiar with that time, you know the major influences from that era.
That being said, hearing Ace Frehley on the Alive album kick-started things, but EVH put it in high gear as far as needing to play.
Nowadays, I'm probably more influenced by Brian May than anyone.

The very first time I heard Hand of Doom I had to know how to play that riff.

Yeah...wait, which riff? I love Geezer's opening, and Iommi joining him...but the bridge before and the one with "...You're havin a good time, baby" is mandatory head-banging. And then Iommi just lets all Hell break loose with "Oh you...You know you must be blind..." riff.

Damn. Goosebumps.

Slayer did a descent cover of it...

See, I didn't have that exposure, the guitar was a complete effing mystery to me. Dad played the tuba at USC and Mom played Chopin on the piano. I can play it a little, but I NEVER liked the piano.

how do you think he got it to stick, and for you not to wind up hating it? like an over zealous sports dad?

I've got guitar and golf for my son. He loves both to this point (6) just don't want to push him to "XBox Kid" by being overbearing.

My mother:

"You're not going to play video games inside all summer. I'm signing you up for guitar lessons."

"GAH MOM YOU SUCK!"

The real ONE moment:

Going to a Tommy Emmanuel concert. He opened with The Hunt. I didn't know that someone could kick so much arse on the guitar.

Listening to my dad play dust in the wind over and over when I was little. I knew I had to learn to do that asap.

I thought Ace Frehley was the coolest musician ever when I was a kid. I wanted to be cool like him. I still kinda feel that way.

I had listened to rock all my life and then I saw a live concert on tv late night and it was Jake E Lee playing Killer of Giants.

I grew up watching the old MTV and always wanted a guitar but the introduction of Appetite for Destruction solidified the want. Finally got a cheap guitar for Christmas right before I turned 10.

I am very late to the game.

Eric Clapton unplugged planted the seed. Then YouTube videos 5 years ago. Jim Croce mainly did me in. I knew i was going to buy an acoustic. Jim is tough. And that little Maury bastard behind him!!!?

I'll never get there.

I have paid for two and half years of drum lessons for my 10 YO son, and purchased thousands of dollars of drums, cymbals and accessories. His group at School of Rock in Dallas needed a singer, so he recently stepped out of his box and performed at House of Blues in Dallas and sang Song 2 by Blur and Adventure of a Lifetime by Coldplay. All of a sudden, he's discovered (A) he has real talent singing and (B) he likes being in the spotlight up front. Even the instructor for his group said he is one of the better kids he's worked with on vocals and we should encourage him. So, he just told me he now wants to learn guitar so he can sing and be up front all the time.

That ONE moment. It happens. In his case, it isn't so much as a love of guitar (yet) but a means to an end.
