Just picked up a Tele for pennies. The guy I stole...uhh...bought it from claims to be a hobby luthier, but the setup is horrendous. Super-high action, terrible intonation, and pickups basically flush with the pickguard. On the plus side, the neck isn't twisted, truss rod works, no noise from the pots, and frets show zero wear. Anybody got some target numbers for neck relief, action, and pickup height? Stock pups, btw.
TIA

TheFretShack can probably give you a good recommendation but what I'd do is start with a Fender factory setup and then adjust to your liking.

Neck Relief: .008"-.012" at 8th fret (depending on neck radius)

Action: 3/64"-5/64" at 17th fret (depending on neck radius)

Pickup Height: 4/64"-8/64" (depending on pickup)

Set it up that way, set the intonation and then go from there. Also make sure the bridge saddles have the correct radius.

I'd add ...

Do the set-up tasks in proper order. Neck relief, saddle height, intonation, pickup height.

Match the above neck relief measurements with the guitar in playing position so gravity has less effect/influence on neck relief.

Balanced sounding pickups are typically set to where the treble side is slightly closer to the strings than the bass side.

Good advice in the posts above.

I'd add, pickup height is the last/easiest part. Adjust the pickups from side to side to fit your taste. Teles can be very bright in the bridge, so you may want to lower the high E string side a bit.

The big part of pickup height, is you want the pickup heights set to where if you go from bridge to neck pickup, the volume stays similar. You don't want to have to adjust volume every time you switch pickups.

What kind of Tele? What is the pickup configuration?

Teles are kind of my thing. I have 5 of em. 3 Fenders, 2custom made (Partscasters). One reliced.

Yes that and also across the strings on the same pickup. Here's a good video that should help. It's for a Strat but the same should apply to a Tele. LINK

Thanks! I've been tweaking on this thing for a few days. With .008 relief in the neck, I'm still getting some buzz above fret 15. I've checked with a fret rocker, and I can't find any high ones. Maybe I need to put a little "fall away" on the last few. Preferred method?
