System of a Down play in Armenia for the first time (11:30 AM CDT)

This year is the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, and the band, whose four members are all of Armenian descent, will commemorate that tragedy today. In fact, the entire ‘Wake Up The Souls’ tour was focused on bringing awareness of the 1915 tragedy.
April 24, 1915 is seen as the beginning of the attempted extermination of the people of Armenia, and over a span of 8 years, over 1.5 million Armenians were killed by the Ottoman Empire. The Turkish government still denies the massacre took place and System of a Down has used this tour to combat such policy.
Drummer John Dolmayan has said, “It’s truly an honor for System of a Down to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the Armenian Genocide by performing our first-ever concert on Armenian soil.” While in a Reddit AMA earlier this month, Serj Tankian talked further about their social agenda, “The Genocide and our quest for justice has now been engrained into the DNA of Armenian culture and has become the most prevalent characteristic and bond among our people. No culture wants to be victimized forever. But does that have to take over our cultural treasures? Isn’t what we’re doing with System Of A Down the perfect marriage of that? To present our cultural assets while fighting for justice. One without the other is an irreversible loss I think.”

In a way they have fallen into the same trappings of stardom and arrogance that consumed Rage Against The Machine.
I am all for a band writing politically-driven lyrics and attempting to spread a message through their art, but it has almost become overkill with System of a Down.
They were one of the biggest names in the heavy alternative scene when Toxicity was released, but after a few lackluster albums and some inconsistent touring they have become an afterthought for many people.

I realize that, and I have no problem with them standing up for their beliefs and attempting to shed light on a very dark subject.
However, I personally believe that their politically-driven career has held them back to a certain extent.
During the '60s and early '70s it was cool to write protest music but there was a great deal of civil strife and injustices taking place in our country which listeners could connect with.
However, as much as the SJWs attempt to launch their own "_________ Rights Movement", there is not nearly the degree of social and political chaos that was occurring during that time period.
Even during the early '90s during the Rodney King Riots there were people who understood the plight of hip-hop artists.
But System of a Down's message often falls on deaf ears due to the sheer ignorance and apathy of Americans. Most people couldn't tell you the first thing about Armenia or where it's located on a globe. There is little connection with the audience because it doesn't impact them directly.
The same thing was the case when Rage Against The Machine shifted their message more and more to the governmental issues and political abuse occurring in Central and South America. No one except a few left-wing radicals really gave much of a shite.

It wore off to the members of the band before it did anywhere else. Not to mention they had an extremely dedicated following. I get the point you're trying to make but I wouldn't put Rage in the same category as System of a Down.

I would just like to take this opportunity to express my opinion that System of the Down is the worst band of all time...they should stay in Armenia wherever the frick that is.....

Both RATM and SOAD would still be hugely popular if they were putting out new albums and touring on a regular basis. I know the average RATM fan doesn't care about their political message, they just want to mosh with all their bros.

I'd like to think so...if not for the seeming utter death of rock music in general.
I think System are not sweating it at all...their career path has been more or less intentional, IMO.

We could say their are messages in a ton of music. Political, spiritual, whatever the case may be that are afterthoughts for most people. Not just a politically driven band.

Very true.
I honestly just wish they would have further explored the raw sound and brutality of the self-titled debut and Toxicity.

I've been mainlining Toxicity for the past few days. I really think Chop Suey might be one of the greatest rock song of all time. The finale is utterly transcendent. These guys were truly unique.
