Otis Clay was a Mississippi born, Chicago based singer. His work is somewhere between smooth Motown and raw R&B.

"That's How It Is When You're In Love" (1967)

"Baby Jane" (1969)

"Trying To Live My Life Without You" (1971)

Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes - "Get Out (And Let Me Cry)" (1965)

This made the R&B top 40, long before Teddy Pendergrass entered the picture

The Capitols - "We Got A Thing That's In The Groove" (1966)

The "Cool Jerk" guys return with a soundalike you can still Jerk it to.

An ad for an attempted comeback by The Platters, but more notable for the tiny plug at the bottom for Lee Moses' masterpiece "Bad Girl"

The Masqueraders - "I Ain't Got to Love Nobody Else" (1967)

Smooth harmony group that never had a big hit but did have an impressively convoluted history: Originated in Dallas, recorded in Detroit (though not for Motown, as Berry Gordy deemed them too similar to The Temptations), went down to Memphis to record for Chips Moman, then eventually back to Texas and some obscure indie labels, and apparently were on the America's Got Talent TV show in 2017!

I sure didn’t make the “America’s Got Talent” connection. Longevity.

For no particular reason other than I appreciate this thread and love this song.

Thanks for your contributions.

Merry Christmas to all.

The incomparable Lou Rawls y’all.

Only saw Don Covay mentioned once.
Don Covay - Sookie Sookie
The MG’s and The Memphis Horns backing Don. Yet another killer Stax studio track.

Steppenwolf cover Sookie Sookie

Bob Kuban and the In-Men - "Jerkin' Time" (1966)

St. Louis' top show band, they had a national hit with "The Cheater". There must have been something in the Midwestern water, as this reminds me a whole lot of Chicago Soul stalwarts Curtis Mayfield and Major Lance. (Oh and The Jerk was a popular dance of the era you filthy pervs)

Walter Scott was the lead singer in the Bob Kuban Band. He mysteriously disappeared upon his return from a Los Vegas appearance and his car was sitting at the airport. His body was found in a cistern many years later. Scott's wife was having an affair and it was determined that Mrs. Scott's lover murdered Walter Scott aa well as his own wife so the two cheaters could be together. Ironic?
