I saw the Eagles last year and that was a great show right before covid even though Glenn Frey was gone.

And no Don Felder, so, congratulations, you saw an Eagles tribute band.

Yeah but will it be the same without Walter Becker?

I'm having significant problems with it. Isn't this just "Donald Fagen featuring the music of Steely Dan"? They could get by without anyone else, but Steely Dan WAS Fagen and Becker. Accept no substitutes.

Fagen and Becker were the composers, arrangers and engineers for the Dan from inception thru the latter day return to touring. But Becker was not a large part of the live show when they did come back

He barely played (a little guitar and some bass) and was generally inaudible when he did. Now if Fagen were to write new music and release a new “steely dan” album I’d say that was poor taste but this live show is fine without Becker.

Is it Steely Dan without all the great guitar work as originally done by Larry Carlton, Denny Diaz, Elliot Randall, Dean Parks, Jeff Baxter, etc.? Becker was not capable of playing it, for around 25 years Jon Herrington has carried the guitar work, and nails all of it. In their concerts Becker would have been more useful just holding Herrington's spare guitar.

If Steely was like Zeppelin where each member was integral to creating and playing their music on every album and at every show, you might have an argument. But how many studio musicians and guest players contributed to the Dan's music? Zappa was still Zappa when his band changed constantly. Toto is still Toto. As long as Fagen is there, it's Steely Dan.

I honestly did not know Becker had died. Seeing the date I had a lot of shite going on. But still…
