Starting guitarist. Saw Dave Matthews show on HDNet today. I am depressed.

Sad. I am not a huge fan, just saw him and another older dudes sitting on stools with a couple Martins and knew awesomeness would ensue. It did. My playing is hopeless.

I watched Joe Bonamassa's warm up routine, and I didn't pick up my Strat for 3 weeks.

I face the same thing—I'll probably never be more than a mediocre chord strummer. But there is a way to keep going, keep playing and not give up:
Write your own songs.
First off, that adds a lot of your own personality to your music—gives your music a unique identity. Second, you can write stuff that will accommodate your weaknesses—and strengths. Even if you don't play well, an interesting song is an interesting song—you don't have to be Eric Clapton to write one.
Finally ... unless you're quite good, it's generally a losing game to play covers that listeners will compare unfavorably to the original. The few covers I play are obscure ones for that very reason. At the very least, your own songs will sound better because no one's heard them on Classic Rock stations before.

Don't get discouraged. Keep playing, and you'll get better.
When I was in HS Dave Matthews was a huge musical influence of mine. In fact, it was the Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds Live at Luther College album where I really started to challenge myself and learn to play. Making the chords, and switching chords and riffs became easier but the real challenge was emulating Dave's rhythm patterns, and learning to get the most out of the acoustic guitar as a percussive instrument. I would go home and play for hours along with those CDs, and if not for doing that I wouldn't be nearly as good as I am right now. I'm not suggesting that I'm really all that great, but I am saying I would be a lot worse if not for Dave.
Today I have a hard time really listening to his stuff. I think I burnt myself out on him. That, and his newer material doesn't appeal to me.

See you got it all wrong. Guitarist isn't a sport or a contest. If/when you get better you create your own ways and styles. You don't have to compete with Mattews. That's what music is

Not trying to compete. Just depressed that I didn't start dicking around with a guitar 20 years ago.
