Spin-off Thread: Miscategorized as Glam or Hair Metal

From the Glam thread. Hair Nation is pretty much my go-to channel in the car. But several bands are lumped in that grouping that may not belong.
Someone mentioned GnR and I tend to agree. Also, I’ve never really thought Ratt was a true hair metal band as their lyrics were often darker and their sound was as well than your Poisons or your Cinderellas.
Any others?

From the other thread I'd say,
GNR definitely
And Def Leppard, they started going Pop some in the Hysteria days but were never Glam.

RATT openly embraced the Glam look in the early days. They were my first concert & my favorite “hair” band of that era. Their work holds up.
GNR was the first band to put glam on notice that it’s time was up. After Appetite/Lies came out a lot of bands cut down on the hair/makeup, brought out the acoustic guitars,& went more bluesy. Grunge was the killshot.
Bang Tango got lumped in with glam but their 2nd album was pure Funk rock.

RATT was way more glam/hair metal than Cinderella. After Cinderella had a couple hits on Night Songs they were able to gain more creative control.

Not only are they a hair band, they're glam also.

Most anything out of los Angeles during 1983-1989 is hair inspired by 70s glam
Except Chris Holmes, he gets a pass. He was metal caught up in the wrong band in the wrong scene but doing it anyways

Early Anselmo-era Pantera anyone?

Whitesnake put out 7 hard rocking, nasty, bluesy albums before Tawny Kitaen slithered on the hood of a car and the boys started primping their hair for music videos. Never thought they were a hair band.
Despite DLR’s look and the zany videos, VH is in no way and hair metal band. They were a hard rock band.
Hair metal to me is that pussy-whipped sound of Winger, White Lion, etc, who might have had a tough time getting signed to a record deal without the popularity of MTV.

The Winger guys are all amazing musicians. But yeah their songs for the most part suck. Due to that I think they were rightfully mocked.

Agreed. And Vito Bratta of WL is an amazing guitarist. But the music for my tastes was wimpy and manufactured.

Dime: "We jammed with Slayer all the time...Kerry and shite: cool!"
Fan: "...seen videos, but that was back when Phil had his hair."
Dime: "Yeah, that was a wig back then, dude."
-From autograph session, 1993.
The video is on YT...it's supposed to be a guitar clinic to sell Randall amps, but it's pretty much a hosted memorial now. Sad but wonderful.
48:00 minute mark or so to start. Watch his facial expressions as "Cemetary Gates" solo plays in background...he is playing the notes in his head. Then as the end of the song goes (the harmonics duel with Phil) he's still mentally playing- the subtle eye-brow lift while he's talking to a fan
...just such a 100% Dime thing to do.
(Girl you know it's true)
(what happened to the head bang emoticon? dafuq?)

Then why the urge to dance like female strippers when playing a riff?
Hair metal gets shite because it takes all the balls out of metal. Therefore it can't be respected.

You got me.
I get your larger point, though. Before the hair band aesthetic came into vogue for MTV, Whitesnake was an established British blues/rock band. They had nothing to do with the Sunset Strip metal scene that brought glam/hair metal to the forefront. I saw Whitesnake with Great White opening back in 1988.

You’re clearly more articulate than me as you made the point I was attempting to make.

That's immature, but ok - means Ratt is not glam by default, pre- Theatre of Pain Crue isn't glam, and Dokken is just an anomaly.
Ozzy's look was glam af on The Ultimate Sin tour, but the music sure af wasn't.
(cept for maybe the poppy "Shot in the Dark" single).
ETA: Whitsesnake...such an all-star line-up with Campbell, Sarzo, Vandenberg, and Aldridge, yet every masterful guitar note on that landmark album was written and recorded by John Sykes (Tygers of Pan Tang), booted out by the cuck-master Coverdale Immediatley AFTER laying down all guitar tracks.
Vandenberg recorded one solo on that album, and it was meh af (Here I Go Again).
John Sykes was a teen prodigy, as seen here in 1981...(black LP, singer's left) TPT - Love Don't Stay
Go Tygers!

Its still not as bad as that Nu-metal shite at the turn of the century. As music focused less on guitar and more on drums & bass
