Something you can dance to.. I don't want a funeral, but in some case my wife overrides my wishes I hope she comes to her senses and makes a party out of it.

I was singing "Simple kind of man" at a friends memorial one time and he walked in the door. True story.

I haven't put much thought into this because I haven't died yet, but off the top of my head, perhaps:

What, was he lost in the wilderness and presumed dead or something?

Nah. He was a sad soul, viet nam vet and lost his mama when he was young after a fight. Went to nam, and moved to Alaska. He worked as a part time handy man at the Dead Dog (the place this song is about.

One night in the club the DJ said the troopers just came and told us he had been shot and killed. That part of the State was wild as hell back then (early 2000's) and they found his truck parked beside the road with his body next to it.

We held the service the next night, he didn't have family or close friends but I knew his favorite song was "Simple kind of man" so I sang and dedicated it to the guy, with a guitar accompanying. Halfway through he walked through the door. Turns out he sold his truck that night, and the dude who bought it got killed, not Mark (the dudes name.) There was no ID on the body. Kind of ruined the whole memorial service.

Changed that guy's life, at least for a little while, he disappeared a few years later for points unknown. He said afterwards he had no idea that many people cared about him.

Man, I miss those days...price to pay to join civilization again, I suppose. It's not nearly as interesting though.

There are some good ones... Before they built a trooper station just West of Wasilla, that place was one of the most interesting places I have ever been. That song I linked above, the Dead Dog, was about my former haunt. "Progress and civilization" makes places more fit for the average person, but takes away some of it's most interesting characters and events.

The band "Portugal. the man" grew up (most of them) in that semi lawless area and drew their early inspiration from the experience.

Abide with Me (from 101 Best Loved Hymns cd)

Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.
