I absolutely agree. Selling England by the Pound is a brilliant album, with everyone in the band at their creative and technical peak. That album was ahead of it's time and can be compared with some of the stuff Pink Floyd was doing at that same time.

Tony Banks 
Rutherford never needed to be a guitar hero. Sonically, Banks was the meat & potatoes of their sound. And I love some of the post-Gabriel era. Listen to Collin's singing and playing on "Genesis". I'd agree with that album being the portence to a more mainstream sound, but it's a great record.

I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility.

Everyone tries to be too edgy and hip on this board. I would say just the opposite.
Early eighties Genesis/solo Phil Collins was genius. But to each his own.

Well, MR was the original Bass player and when Steve Hackett left, the band's sound really changed.......Hackett was the man!!!

Maybe I'm missing something. Please point out some genius from this era. Phil was a great drummer but he sang more and played less drums as time went on. Tony was a spectacular keyboardist but the songs featured less and less instrumentalism (possibly not a word).

Exactly. The band survived the loss of Gabriel and in some ways it helped them. But when Hackett left, they became a different band.

I do, one of the best of any genre. His live stuff teamed with Chester Thompson was phenomenal (which I witnessed 3 times).
