Their Satanic Majesties Request’ – the album cover was photographed by Michael Cooper. He designed what was, at the time, a revolutionary three-dimensional (lenticular) image that moves when tilted.

To make use of this technology, the Stones had to travel to Mount Vernon Studios in New York (the shoot took place on 13 and 14 September 1967). However, the studio’s condition was that the band had to organise the entire production themselves. The band members therefore spent hours hand-building and arranging the elaborate backdrop.

Brian Jones and photographer Michael Cooper are setting up a complex backdrop for the cover shoot of the album.

Michael Cooper also shot the cover for Sgt Pepper. He became a heroin addict and committed suicide at age 31.

In a suicide note addressed to his son, Adam, Cooper wrote:
quote:

Don't believe the court when they say that I killed myself when the balance of my mind was disturbed. I just live in a disturbed world, and, as the old poem says, "I hear the sound of a different drum." ... I come from what your generation will call the 'Half and Halves'. A generation that made a few changes, but had to experience too many other kinds of changes they had no control over, so some of us were bound to fall by the wayside. I'm one of those.
