Blabbermouth
quote:

Ritchie Blackmore will join DEEP PURPLE on stage for the first time in more than three decades during the band's headlining concert Wednesday night (August 12) at the Northwell at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, New York.

quote:

The 81-year-old guitarist, who last played with DEEP PURPLE in 1993, revealed his guest appearance for the Wantagh gig during an Instagram Live with his wife Candice Night on Tuesday (August 11).

quote:

Blackmore said in part (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): "There is something we wanted to mention about tomorrow night… Well, it is a secret and I don't want anybody to know, but I'm probably get up and do an encore with the band, DEEP PURPLE. But you can't tell anybody, and I know that this is gonna be kept a secret. And will it? I suppose so."

I wish they would have announced this sooner, because I would be on a plane to NYC

We're all gettin' old.

His solo on Highway Star is an all-time classic.

ETA: saw Blackmore's Rainbow w/ RJD on vocals open for REO in the Riverside Centroplex circa 1980.

For you Purple fans out there - this will be the closest you can get to the MkII lineup, with 2 of the original lineup.

The original lineup was Rod Evans (vocals), Blackmore (guitar), Nick Simper (bass), Jon Lord (keys), Ian Paice (drums)

Ian Gillan and Roger Glover came in on vocals and bass, respectively, to form MkII.

So, with Blackmore joining them for the encore, you would have both Ians, Glover and Blackmore (80%) of MkII, missing only Jon Lord (RIP).

One would assume with Blackmore there for the encore, they will go with Highway Star and Smoke on the Water.

(ETA: Heck, with Airey with Deep Purple now, with Blackmore and Glover, that's a 60% reunion of Rainbow from the Down to Earth and Difficult to Cure era.)

If I still lived in New Jersey, I would have bought a ticket yesterday when I saw the news. Saw them back in '98, Dream Theater, ELP, Deep Purple.

I was there too, it was 1978. Three months before we had Mahogany Rush w/Frank Marino opening for Styx at the Assembly Center.

Man, that's one hell of a concert memory right there.
