Seems as if most people that hate on REM know almost nothing of Cronic Town through LRP. I continued to buy their stuff until giving up after Automatic for the people.

Looking back, I should have stopped with LRP. It's like two different bands to me. Sure, I can name a hand-full of songs I liked from those like Texarkana, Man on the Moon, WTFK and Crushed With Eyeliner, but overall, the albums were just bad. Allmusic tends to track this, but they gave AFTP 5 stars.

Document seems to be the one I can't make up my mind about. It is the fence for me. OK, not sure what the point of this is now. I guess just a discussion.

well pre-Document and post-Life's Rich is the same thing. Not sure I'm getting what you mean by "vs".

Did you mean Pre-Life's Rich vs Post-Document?

Actually I'd say REM the IRS days vs REM the Warner Brother days. That's the comparison I'd make.

Document through Accelerate.

You might want to edit.

Not editing. I'll own up to my bass akwardness.

I thought you meant that tiny little time frame of 1986-87.

I need something.

But back to your topic. I'd compare the IRS records vs the Warner Bros. records. Document was the last IRS record and Green was their first.

But like you, I gave up after Automatic. I think Green was outstanding and Pop was horrible but I think that was their purpose.

well I think Life's Rich is my favorite but I like Green. I'd say the first side minus Stand is great.

I think Reckoning is my least favorite up until Automatic. I never cared for HI-FI, up, reveal but Around the Sun is solid material from them.

I'm a pre-automatic FTP guy. They kind of lost me at that point...or maybe I just got old.

Carnival of Sorts.

Probably lost most of their early supporters at that point. I hated Out of Time "pop" album. That album became nails on a chalkboard to me.

Outside of Letter Never Sent which is one of my favorites, It's not one I ever listened to a lot. Not that it's bad, just never got into it.

Just about wore it out in my dorm.
To me, it's solidness from beginning to end is only beaten by LRP.

Harborcoat is my second favorite song from them.
So. Central Rain is right up there.
Rockville - another top 5.

Pretty Pursuasion.

Dang, it's just pretty much awesome.

for the post-IRS years, I always liked New Adventures in Hi-Fi and thought it was always overlooked. Very strong album, if maybe just a tad too long.

I remember not really liking Monster, but it grew on me and I really like it now.

That being said, LRP is my favorite from start-to-finish, and I like the murkiness of Fables.

I think the dividing line with REM is pre and post GREEN. Document is still REM, IMO. Green started the "Stand" and on to "Shiny Happy People" period which is whole different band to me.

I still bought it and enjoyed it but liked it less.
