Yeah, it was the Byrds's sound that was revolutionary more than the songwriting.
I think people tend to lump the Byrds in with other bands as far as country rock and don't realize how how far out in front they were in 1967 with that sound, especially considering how fast things were moving in those years.
You could well argue that were already "psychedelic" by late 1965 and laying down what may be the prototype American powerpop song, "So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star" in 1967.
The Who were another who's sound, more than the amount of hits in their case, had a very wide influence. Much more so than The Kinks. Even if I think The Kinks put out more amazing songs, I'm not sure how strong their influence actually was aside from just being an amazing band.
