Had an interesting conversation with a fellow today regarding music becoming public domain and his dislike for having to pay royalties on music he uses on line in videos he builds.
I told him that I wasn't for any music ever becoming public domain. Someone wrote that music and should be rewarded for doing so.
That got me to thinking. How long should you have to pay a royalty on music? This guy was saying after 5 years, it should be free to use. I thought he was nuts. Am I nuts for believing a composer should make royalties on his music for as long as he lives?

Don’t be concerned if the song sounds familiar...
Public Domain—great Jerry Jeff Walker song, but I actually prefer Gary P. Nunn’s version.
The laws regarding public domain are fine the way they are. Five years would be a joke.

A digital rights/ royalties bill passed the senate today and now just has to go back to the house for a re-vote since the senate tweaked it. Has to do with who and how music royalties are paid by digital streaming services. I assume yahoo is included in this.

a bill that creates a framework for better compensation of artists for digital plays of their music and makes it easier for music rights organizations to collect those fees from distributors of streamed music as they do from traditional plays on TV and radio.

videos he builds.
How long does he think those should be protected?
Will he be cool with it if 5 years from now I rip off his video, put my name on it, and sell copies?

Exactly!

Sounds like the type of guy who sells copied CDs off the street.
